This book is the enthralling story of the extraordinary band of amateurs in Room 40 - university professors, clergymen, naval schoolmasters, stockbrokers, and bankers - who captured all the German naval codes before the end of 1914 and of how they read them and their replacements over the next four years. I found this book well written, very readable and based on sound research. Beesly discusses the development of British Naval intelligence during the First World War, as well as its evolution as the war proceeded. A great deal of focus was placed on explaining the stages of development. The various departments and divisions of Naval intelligence did not cooperate, nor apparently did they understand the benefits to be derived from decentralization (a big problem) and cooperation. The areas worked separately, not being able to influence analysis and decision making in the other areas. As changes in leadership were made, these problems began to be worked out.
A very interesting book for those with an interest in WWI activities of the Royal Navy, naval intelligence in general and in the evolution of modern day electronic spying. ( )
