New York City's top concierge gives up a keyhole view into the luxe hotel rooms, private dining and dressing rooms of the ridiculous, rich and demanding Michael Fazio is the ultimate behind-the-scenes support man. Want two orchestra tickets to the Broadway musical that just won the Tony? Call Fazio. How about an upgrade to first class on an overbooked overnight flight to Tokyo? Call Fazio. Or a roomful of fresh hydrangeas--in winter? That's right. Call Fazio. From his early start as the harried and neglected personal assistant to a typical L.A. casting agent, Fazio took what he learned there and moved into concierge work at New York City's Intercontinental Hotel, where he was eventually able to parlay his services into a large and successful business of his own. InConcierge Confidential,Fazio reveals the behind-thescenes madness that goes into getting the rich and famous what they want, and shares some great insider knowledge on how to get access to the unattainable without making the concierge, waiters and other service people crazy. A few of Fazio's tips include: * When and how much to palm in tips * How to get a seat or ticket to the hottest thing in town * How to avoid being labeled a rube the minute you walk through the door * How you can become your favorite store or restaurant's most beloved customer * And much more… (plus d'informations)

Keep the Change: A Clueless Tipper's Quest to Become the Guru of the Gratuity par Steve Dublanica (freddlerabbit)
freddlerabbit: Fazio tells you a lot about the attitude you should adopt and gives a few rough guidelines on tipping; Dublanica gives a broad review of tipping and much more specific information. Both writers write with personality and humour and make their books so much more than just rules to follow.… (plus d'informations)

Fun and insubstantial. ( )

A hotel concierge explains the dos and don’ts of the service industry. His observations are at times catty, but usually entertaining. He name drops celebrities that are on both his naughty and nice list. Honestly, I just kept thinking about how insane some people’s lifestyle is. Hiring a helicopter for a quick evening trip because a cab would take too long, paying a $1,000 for a dinner just to be seen in a fancy restaurant, etc. I will never understand people who value fame and fortune above all and I think working in an industry that was saturated with those people would be awful.

BOTTOM LINE: Light and fun, read it if you’re interested in the world of people who make the behind the scenes things happen for the rich and famous. He has worked in New York City for years, so I liked seeing his short list of places he recommends checking out when you visit. ( )

Fazio goes from an agent's assistant in Hollywood to a cruise ship singer to a hotel concierge, and he's very readable in the process.

The people and stories are amazing - the Russian with a suitcase full of cash, fulfilling wishes on Whoopi's show, a chocolate bath. I also liked how he touched on the down sides - the crazies and how to handle. A fun and light read. ( )

This book is an engaging combination of guidance (how to treat service people, what you can and can't expect, a few mentions of how and why to tip without going over the top) and the kind of behind-the-scenes gossip even people who don't read People can enjoy. Fazio relates stories and lessons learned from his time as a hotel concierge and co-head of a concierge service for Manhattan's super-wealthy. Some of the stories are touching, some hilarious, and some just unbelievable - and you want to keep turning the pages until you hit the end. Fazio is an enjoyable narrator, and is the kind of guy I'd love to buy a drink - efficient, businesslike, determined to serve his clients well and still able to recognize the humor and insanity of people.
