Recently divorced and made redundant from his job, Julian Crosby needs a break from reality. That's why he's gone to Hawaii... If his personal circumstances had been different-if he were simply on a two-week vacation in Maui with his now former wife-then he surely would have laughed and said "no" to the outrageous offer from the funny-looking Hawaiian wearing a loud tropical shirt with an equally loud, not to mention obnoxious, blue and yellow parrot named Buenaventura perched upon his shoulder to buy a rundown boat called Scoundrel. But that was then and this is now... Or is it? Meanwhile, sixty years ago, Amelia Earhart is getting ready for her much publicized flight around the world. Is this daring adventure to be her final flight, her swan song? Or is she actually on a reconnaissance mission for President Roosevelt? And what does her ill-fated flight have to do with Julian, his innocent Hawaiian holiday and his newly-acquired boat? As Buenaventura reveals, "Only time will tell" as their two worlds unexpectedly and impossibly collide. In this award-winning novel a weekend sailor shipwrecked on an uncharted atoll in the South Seas eventually discovers the island's only other human inhabitant-a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to 1930s lost flying ace Amelia Earhart.… (plus d'informations)

The book is unusual with Julian Crosby in the present day who is looking to get away after he loses his job and his divorce by going to Hawaii where he buys a boat from a strange character. He also inherits the parrot from a friend of a friend who is moving to California. When Julian takes the boat out for a spin he gets stranded on an island where he meets a woman named Amie that he starts a relationship with until the two of them become separated and Julian figures out a way to get back to the mainland. Also in the book aviator Amelia Earhart is preparing for her trip around the world. This book is unusual in how it splits up the time and how two people from two different time periods get together. The love affair between Julian and Amie does not fully develop. ( )

I won this book from the Member Giveaways on Library Thing.

This book was very interesting and original. It is a cross between historical fiction and the paranormal.

At first, I didn't know how the two separate stories at the beginning of the book were tied together; Amelia Earhart and Julian Crosby were two characters from two different eras. Obviously, Amelia Earhart's story is set in the past, and Julian Crosby's story is set in present day. Their worlds collide in this book.

Julian Crosby is a 50 year old man, divorced with an almost-adult daughter, who had been forced to retire, and decides to go to Hawaii to relax and contemplate what to do with the rest of his life. He buys a boat from a Hawaiian man and coming back from a side trip, the boat breaks down in the middle of the ocean. After drifting for a few days, he washes up on the shores of an island during a storm.

Meanwhile, the story of Amelia Earhart was being told. Her plane went down on this same island. A search was done, but nobody was able to find this island.

Julian and Amelia somehow meet on this island, where Amelia had found a so-called "fountain of youth", making her the same age as when she crashed the plane so long ago.

This was a very good book; I enjoyed reading it. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and I will be looking for more books from this author! ( )

Very well written and descriptive. A very good read. I was completely immersed in the story and could not put the book down until I finished it!! ( )

...this is some of the best 'in the moment' writing I've read in a very long time.

The scenes are very authentic in their emotions and reactions. I loved some of the lines in the book...
The entire last around-the-world trip Amelia makes is stunningly researched, authentic and gripping...
The island scenes between the survivors are completely plausible, and the unveiling of the island's strangeness is a lot of fun to read.
