Square cat is a story about inclusion. The square cat feels sad because she isn't round like her friends are. Her friends make her feel better when they dress up in a cardboard box. Her two friends patsy and Muade made Eula feel better about being square and they show her the ways that being a square shape is special. This story is all about it being okay to be different which is a great lesson for kids to learn. I think young student could see themselves as this cat and understand how she feels in the story. ( )

50 months - cute funny story about embracing our differences. ( )

I had mixed feelings about this book. I liked this book because I enjoyed the message behind the story. The message was, its okay to be different, everyone is different in one-way or another and there is always a bright side to your differences. The square cat felt left out because he was square and the other cats were round. In the end, he realizes its okay to be different and he can do things that the other, round cats, can’t. I didn’t like this book because I felt as though the illustrations didn’t enhance the story line at all. I think it’s important for a children’s book to be visually engaging to help keep the readers attention and I don’t think this book would do so. The pages consist of simple pictures, such as just the cat with no background or the three main cats, again with no background. The colors are also pretty muted for a children’s book. I also thought the text was a little boring. There was no exciting voices or expressive faces to give emotions for the story. For example, the square cat’s facial expression stays pretty much the same no matter what is going on. ( )

I loved this book because of its plot, its characters, and its illustrations. The plot was about a square cat who was disappointed and self-conscious because he was square shaped and all his friends were round. It goes on about how all of his friends can do things he can't do and he is very upset until his friends help him. First they try to make him into a round cat but they quickly realize he should be square and they reassure him about all of the great things about being a square cat. I loved the plot because it taught the lesson of self-love and friendship. The plot was cute but also meaningful. Another impressive part about this story was the characters. They were well-developed and very likable. I really liked the square cat's friends, Patsy and Maude. They were friendly, loving, and helped the square cat find a reason to love himself. The characters really led me to love this story. Lastly, the illustrations were phenomenal. They greatly enhanced the story but also told stories that weren't told through the text. On one page it showed the cats dancing and eating donuts together and although this was not written about, it added to the story. This illustration and many others made the story amazing. The main idea of the story was that you should love yourself even if you're different than everybody else. ( )
