Story parallels the lives of Cate in modern day to Dorothy whoe helped write the lyrics to Porgy and Bess. Interesting story about a recent widow who found her husband's dead body hanging from the rafters after jumping off her piano. She finds out many terrible things about her husband and he has left her very poor. She goes to her aunt in Folly Beach, SC for healing and hopefully some restoration. She meets a wonderful man, John Risley and becomes captivated with the story of Dorothy and Dubose Heyward, the writers of Porgy and Bess. Was Dorothy the true writer? Anyway, a good tale but not earth shattering. Frank's low country stories are always a good read. The setting is amazing and having been to them myself, that makes the story even better. I enjoyed how the story was set up like a play with the scenes and acts. I don't know much about the Charleston Renaissance but I will most definitely be reading up on it as it seems a very fascinating era.
This novel about dramatists, although lightened by some witty down-home repartee, displays little aptitude for scene-craft. Appartient à la sérieLowcountry Tales (8) Distinctions
