I gave this book a 5/5 because there was great illustrations that informed meaning, shows a sense of community, and the characters problem-solving. This book is part two of his other book, The Giant Seed, and started off with all the pigs on the island but this time they have a new problem they must solve as a community. The pigs are super hot with the sun shining on them, they decide to work together to make a pool and used a ship they made to go get a big iceberg. The illustrations provided, show the pigs doing this action, of getting the ice and bringing it back to their island. They all worked together cutting the ice up and adding it to the pool, the pigs were able to work together and figure out what they needed to do in order for them to not have a heat stroke. Overall, I would love to read this to my class to show them problem-solving skills and how important it is to work with your community. ( )

Arthur Geisert tells a captivating story in his wordless picture book, Ice. The characters in the story live on a hot island where they always feel overcome with the hot weather. Their community pool is also running out of water. In order to help them cool off and fill their pool, some of the people travel to an iceberg using a hot air balloon ship. They carve out some ice and bring it back to their island. They are able to cool off, drink cold water, and swim in a filled pool. A teacher could use this book in many ways to educate students. A central problem and solution can be heavily discussed. Setting can also be taught because of the contrasting climates of hot and cold.

I gave this book a 4/5 star rating. I think this is a little more complex than other wordless picture books. There is a lot going on on each page so this might make it harder for a younger student to understand what is going on. Each page might be hard for a younger student to follow along with and might think that each page is not related to the last one. I think it would be a good book to use to see if a student is able to follow along with the story line. I like that the picture are done well. I would use this book with an older student that might better understand the jumping of each page. I wanted there to be more pictures between each one that they had created to tell more of the story. I love this wordless picture book. The illustrator very effectively included small details in the illustrations to effectively tell a story and add meaning and detail to it. These small details convey important themes throughout the story that the reader can catch onto - for example, all the little pigs each doing different jobs says to the reader that working together gets a job done more efficiently. The story itself combined with the details included in the illustrations adds narrative elements and is open-ended enough that the reader can infer, predict and embellish. ( )

Ice is a great picture book because it shows a sense of community. The characters are a community of pigs that come together to overcome the heat and find a supply of ice to bring back home. This would be a good book to have in the classroom because it shows students what it means to cooperate and work together as a team. When the pigs are in crisis they come together and help each other. This is a valuable lesson for any classroom because for the rest of their lives students are going to have to work and grow with their peers and this books shows what it means to work together. The book also demonstrates problem solving skills. The pigs need to get from one island to another and are able to work through the problem to build the flying ship. Students can use this book to develop problem solving skills. They can learn to look at the whole problem and not just what they see in front of them.
