Southern Illinois' ghost stories stretch from Springfield, where Abraham Lincoln's ghost relaxes in a rocking chair in his old home, to the city of Alton, where the ghost of murdered abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy roams near his monument in Alton Cemetery. While you're in Alton, you'll meet the ghost of Reverend Phillip Mercer who locks and unlocks doors at the First Unitarian Church. In downtown Decatur, you just might run into Red, the Lincoln Theater's most infamous ghost. And if you're still feeling brave, you can wander to the Cracker Factory where you can hear the whistling ghost of Sam Thames. He has a knack for moving things around at night. Get ready to come face to face with these and other Illinois ghosts.… (plus d'informations)

“Ghosts of Springfield and Southern Illinois & Other Haunted Tales from the Prairie State” by Rachel Brooks Posadas is a 159-page paperback book published by Schiffer Publishing. The book covers a wide range of allegedly haunted locations as well as information about the different types of hauntings that can occur. Rachel shares tragic tales like the Old Slave House on Hickory Hill; the death of Elijah Parish Lovejoy, the paranormal activity associated with his tragic death, and the Hundley House in Carbondale.

Particularly enjoyable was the historical information explaining why Illinois is called “Little Egypt.” In addition, the author shares information about the paranormal activity associated with Abraham Lincoln. Information about Lincoln’s relationship with Anne Rutledge is also included. Additional stories in the book include, but are not limited to paranormal happenings at the First Unitarian Church in Alton; the Legend of the Great Piasa; the haunting of Baby Hallow; spirit activity at the River House in Grafton; the haunting of Greenwood Cemetery and the paranormal reports from Cave-in-Rock State Park.

“Ghosts of Springfield and Southern Illinois & Other Haunted Tales from the Prairie State has some great photos that help bring the stories and legends to life. If the reader is seeking an easy read, one that can be read over short periods or in one sitting, the Ghosts of Springfield and Southern Illinois & Other Haunted Tales from the Prairie State is a light book with interesting tales, historical facts, and legends all neatly wound into one clean package.
