This collection examines Oprah Winfrey's influence on American culture. It explores her television show, book club, magazine and website. I don't think I've ever seen an entire episode of her show, but she has long fascinated me for the influence she seems to have over so many people. I appreciated this thoughtful analysis, mostly from a feminist perspective, of how Oprah's emphasis on individual responsiblity -- the take control of your life message -- ignores any systemic racial or gender barriers in society. I also enjoyed reading about how her show, and her book club, have evolved over time. Fascinating. ( )
