“Ever since we’ve had this doll,” Elizabeth said hesitantly, “we’ve had funny things happenthe same dreams and knowing things and stuff like that.” Twins Jane and Elizabeth are twelve years old and have outgrown dolls. Nevertheless, on a cold wet spring Saturday they find themselves in an antique store, inexplicably drawn to a small, tattered old fashioned doll. Even the owner of the store seems to understand that the doll somehow belongs to the girls. Once the twins buy the doll, stranger and stranger things begin to happen, and a young girl from the past seems to be calling out to them. The search to discover the history of the little doll brings the twins terrifyingly close to the world of the supernatural as they finally solve a tantalizing mystery. Janet Lunn’s first novel, long unavailable, is republished in a fresh, beautiful edition.… (plus d'informations)

Quick, fun read. This book would be a great introduction for kids to the mystery genre.

This was a very interesting book. I love these kind of supernatural, back-in-time, ghost-y mysteries, and this one was very well written. And, although the ending/conclusion happened very quickly, it didn't seem rushed like some other books do, when it compromises the writing. The pace of this book was just perfect with the plot, and I really enjoyed it. ( )

12-year-old Twin sisters Jane and Elizabeth are walking down the street when an antique shop window catches their eye. In the window is a doll, and though they are both past playing with dolls, they immediately turn into the shop. The woman in the shop is compelled to sell them the doll for very little money. These are only the first two things in a series of strange events that become steadily creepier - and have them questioning history, and their relationship as twins.
This was an entertaining mystery for elementary kids - it has atmosphere without being gory.
I'd give this to readers who like family stories, mystery stories, and ghost stories. ( )

A powerfully evocative novel about twin sisters cast back a century to 1860s Toronto by a mysterious doll. ( )
