Bomber Command suffered the greatest loss per capita of all the Allied forces, experiencing a 63 per cent casualty rate. One of my earliest memories is of an old black trunk downstairs behind the furnace, next to my father's work bench. To me, the trunk was a mystery. I had never seen its contents, nor had they been described to me, and yet I knew that they had significance to my dad. On one occasion I asked him about it, and was simply told that it was of no interest to me. One day after school I remember trying to open the trunk and discovering that it was locked. This only served to heighten a curiosity in me that was grandually satisfied over a period of decades...

By the summer of 2005 he had made a degree of peace with the experiences of his youth. The course of his life had been altered by the Second World War, and his experiences in war had influenced the man he became. The Saviour, in whom he had trusted and called on in times of great turmoil and terror; who had preserved his life and used his experiences to strengthen his character and enrich his life was calling him home to his reward. He had lived a rich and full life. He was ready to go to his eternal home. On Sunday, September 11, 2005 Lindsay departed this world having truly lived a life of duty with honour. Reflecting on his life, a life that was so impacted by war, Jean summed it up beautifully when she said, "Lindsay left for war a good man, and he returned home a better man."
