The Green Lawn kids - Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose - are on a vacation to visit their favorite author, Wallis Wallace. They travel to Maine to spend some time in her new cabin, and when they arrive they meet Abbi Wallace, Wallis's newly adopted daughter. They instantly love Abbi, and quickly join her in her fascination with observing nature and animals. She uses her telescope to watch the animals in their habitats and takes recordings of various animal sounds with her tape recorder. Abbi is particularly excited about the white wolf that lives nearby, who just had babies, a litter of cute wolf cubs. Not long after the kids arrive, though, Abbi witnesses two people snatch the little cubs from their den! They call the wardens, but with little proof and no clues, there is nothing to be done. The children are determined to help the white wolf. Using the telescope, Abbi's nature recordings, and their sleuthing skills, the kids will find the culprits and bring them to justice, and more importantly, save those little cubs.

The story is fun. I'm happy to see mysteries intended for young readers, and the content matter in this one is sure to appeal to children. Honestly, who doesn't love wolves and their cute babies? My girls enjoyed listening to the book's chapters during our nightly story time, although they sometimes lost interest during more descriptive passages. The clues are very basic and obvious to an adult reader, but that is a given considering the intended audience. I do think the earlier entries in this series had stronger mysteries. My guess is that the author was stretching a bit, after thinking up twenty two other adventures for the Green Lawn trio. Nonetheless, this is a decent story, and a nice introduction to the mystery genre for young readers. ( )

In this addition to the long standing mystery series, we join Dink, Josh and Ruth Rose on their visit to Maine to stay with mystery writer Wallis Wallace and her daughter Abbi for the weekend. However, while they are there find themselves investigating the case of the stolen wolf pups from the Acadia National Park. The narrative introduces new readers of the series to the characters and existing plot without overwhelming repetition. The chapter length, vocabulary and use of illustrations follow the expected transitional chapter book form. The narrative introduces readers to the birth defect spina bifida and a character in a wheelchair and lightly touches on the problem of poaching wild animals. The narrative reveals clues gradually, allowing the reader to consider solutions to the mystery without slowing the pace of the story. Newly independent boy and girl readers would enjoy this series, but will likely outgrow it quickly. This book is recommended as an additional selection for a library already circulating the A to Z Mystery series. (Ages 6-8) ( )

This is an outdoor mystery for early readers, or as a bedtime story.
I like the plot. There are just a few illustratons in black and white , about every third or fourth page.

I have not read any of the other stories in this series, but if this one is typical the series could be a good one to help early readers gain an interest in reading. ( )
