NCLA Review -This historical novel takes place in Colorado in 1888. The story opens with Ember, who calls herself Bert and is dressed as a boy, about to be hung for stealing a horse. She is actually returning the horse because her brother stole it. Deputy John Timmons happens upon the scene and takes Bert to the owner of the horse who demands money. Bert refuses to defend herself because she has run away and is terrified her brothers will find her. John pays the owner and takes Bert back to his ranch to work to pay back this debt. She stays and works hard, but still refuses to give her full name or what she is running from. Even with the uncertainty about Ember, John sees a sweet spirit and his heart is stolen. The plot and characters were well developed and there is resolution to the story. However, very little information is given to make this historically interesting. I like to learn something about the time and place and this novel did not offer that to the reader. DiAnn Mills is an award winning author with fifty books in print. She was the recipient of the Inspirational Reader's Choice Award for 2005 and 2007. Rating: 3 —PD ( )

The Fire In Ember is a historical romance that transports the reader to the old west where life was filled with hard work, hot days and if one was lucky, the loving care of family to come home to at the end of the day. Bert wasn't one of those lucky ones and when John Timmons found her, she was dressed as a boy and about to be hung for horse stealing!

This novel is the second book in Ms. Mills Western Series and I enjoyed it as much as I did her first one, A Woman Called Sage. The Fire in Ember is rich with faith, romance and suspense! The plot kept me guessing and on my toes till the end of the book. I came away with a smile on my face from reading this wonderful romance!

Many thanks to Kim at Nancy Berland Public Relations for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a review on this blog. My review is based on my honest impressions of this book. ( )
