"It began in 1965 when David Gapes, a Wellington journalist, thought of a plan to break the New Zealand State broadcasting monopoly. The scheme was to set up a radio station on board an old ship in the Hauraki Gulf, near Auckland. In spite of desperate financial problems, political opposition, a battle with the police, a major court case, storms and shipwrecks, Gapes and the young friends who joined him achieved what none of the well financed overseas pirates managed: they gained sufficient public support to have broadcasting law changed and finally they came ashore to become the firest and only radio pirates in the world to operate from land legitemately. This dramatic, fast moving story is written by the freelance writer Adrian Blackburn, who covered the progress of the pirate project from its inception." -- Preface.
