"Ce livre est toute ma jeunesse; Je l'ai fait sans presque y songer, Il y parait, je le confesse, Et j'aurais pu le corriger.
Mais quand l'homme change sans cesse, Au passe pourquoi rien changer? Va-t'en, pauvre oiseau passenger; Qui Dieu te mene a ton adresse!"

This book would never have been begun if it had not been for the friendly suggestion of Miss Ocean Lee.
[Author's] Note, 1907 edition.
The idea of Bohemia and its life-style was well-known long before Arthur Ransome produced what has been described as his first real book in July 1907.
Preface, 2002 edition.
When authors are honest to themselves, they admit that their books are failures, in that they are never quite what they wished to make them.
Introductory chapter.
I had hesitated before coming fairly into Bohemia, and lived for some time in the house of relations a little way out of London, spending all my days in town, often, after a talking party in a Bloomsbury flat or a Fleet Street tavern, missing the last train out at night and being compelled to walk home in the early morning.
An arrival in Bohemia.
We now know that Ransome, in the process of gathering material for his autobiography, did reread Bohemia in London.
Epilogue, 1983.

And Chelsea, dotted with groups of studios, full of small streets, and cheap lodgings, is alive with artists and writers, and rich with memories of both.
My life will be the happier, turn out what it may, for these friendships, these pot-house nights, these evenings in the firelight of a studio, and these walks, two or three of us talking from our hearts, along the Embankment in the Chelsea evening, with the lamps sparkling above us in the leaves of the trees, the river moving with the sweet noise of waters, the wings of youth on our feet, and all the world before us.
Despite Ransome's misgivings I am sure he would be delighted to see his first "real book" republished by Oxford University Press seventy-six years after it was written, and in time for its author's hundredth birthday.
