This is a fascinating historical and stylistic study of the lives and careers of three Austrian giants, the composers Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler, and Arnold Schoenberg. When it was originally published, the book ended with Schoenberg's seventieth birthday on September 13, 1944. In this revised version, the author has added a new final chapter which brings the story up to his death in 1951. Dika Newlin began studying with Arnold Schoenberg in Los Angeles at the age of fifteen and was probably one of the youngest pupils he ever accepted. The need for a historical background which would explain the origins of the new style she encountered brought her to the works of Mahler and Bruckner, for Schoenberg often expressed indebtedness to both these composers. The author contends that Schoenberg was the heir not only of Bruckner and Mahler, but of the great Viennese classical tradition. After setting the background of musical tradition in Vienna, Newlin devotes a long section to each of the three figures under scrutiny. An extensive new bibliography includes important writings on the three men and on other germane subjects since the original printing. New footnotes call attention to the latest discoveries and a great deal of recent information has been incorporated directly into the text. For the amateur musician, the record collector, and the musically adventurous, this brand new version of an important comparative study remains indispensable and rewarding reading. The author is on the faculty of the New School for Social Research. - Dust jacket.… (plus d'informations)
