The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Prose Poetry: Contemporary Poets in Discussion and Practice (2010, edited by Gary L. McDowell and F. Daniel Rzicznek) continues the decades-long discussion on prose poetry. Whether prose poetry is considered 'flash fiction' or simply paragraphs of free verse is not answered, and, as we learn from the many essays, poems, and examples provided, no one should expect an answer. What this guide does provide is exactly what its subtitle proposes: contemporary poets discussing prose poetry, influential pieces, practices, and examples from contemporary poets. McDowell and Rzicznek selected / solicited some insightful essays; these writer's contributions provide personal essays, criticism, and variety in example, often expanding upon the foundation of prose poetry discussions started in Michael Benedikt's The Prose Poem: An International Anthology (1977); continued in George Meyers, Jr's Epiphanies: The Prose Poem Now (1987); disected in Michel Delville's The American Prose Poem: Poetic Form and the Boundaries of Genre (1998), and anthologized in David Lehman's Great American Prose Poems: From Poe to the Present (2003). Some of the many contributors to this guide include Nin Andrews, Joe Bonomo, Maxine Chernoff, Denise Duhamel, Bob Hicok, Christopher Kennedy, David Keplinger, David Lazar, William Olsen, David Shumate, Mark Wallace, and Gary Young. This text would provide an excellent starting point for writers interested in prose poetry, particularly because many of the contributors' essays explore the writer's personal history / exposure to prose & poetry and discuss process, practice, and genre as writers keenly aware that the genre discussion is ever-present.
