I adored this story of a little boy named Gunner who opposed the stereotype of football players because he is short and round — as the book describes him. He plays football for the love of the sport, and despite always being benched by his coaches, he is happy. When given the chance, he scores two touchdowns and proves himself to his team. Overall it was an incredibly wholesome story that taught positive sportsmanship and a healthy outlook on self despite others opinion. ( )

Gunner wasn’t the typical football player. His size and shape seemed to get in the way of his love for the sport. Most people underestimated him when he was placed on the pee wee football team. Gunner sat the bench for most of the season until the last game. After getting his chance to show his talent people were shocked on how great he was as quarterback. This is a great book to show that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. The other thing the author decided to Throw in the book that the kid who scored the winning touchdown was a girl. This also shows how you can’t judge someone by size, looks, or gender.

Ohhh. Myyyy. Goooosh. This book set a new bar for how I rate picture books. From now on, if it doesn't make me tear up, it doesn't get five stars. My standards have officially been raised. I NEVER expected the ending. I don't want to give it away if you haven't read it, but it's so good!! The beginning of the book, however, is about this white boy who's so happy-go-lucky and optimistic about his football aspirations despite him being physically subpar compared to major athletes. He had a sharp arm and became third-string quarterback. He didn't play all season until the championship game, where he managed to tie the score with the opposing team. But in a quick turn of events, his team lost by interception. ( )

Gunner, Football Hero is a great book for young boys or girls who love sports. Gunner is a young boy who loves football, but doesn't look like the average football player. He's short and round and of course, he wants to be quarterback, which is usually a tall and skinny person. He is very determined, he gets to practice early, last one to leave, watches football all weekend, studies the playbook over and over but never gets his chance to touch the field until the championship game when the 1st and 2nd string quarterbacks get hurt. Gunner plays awesome but when the game was on the line, and all his team needed to do was score on this final drive, Gunner throws an interception. Even though his team lost, they were so proud of Gunner and he got a rookie of the year trophy. This is a great book for young kids to show them if you set your mind to it, it will happen. Just keep working hard and your dreams will come true. Gunner probably thought he would never play in a game, but he made sure he was prepared if he did. That's a great lesson for young students. The illustrations were great also and I really enjoyed this book. ( )

Showed persistence of a young boy who had a dream of playing football. He worked very hard and kept his head up until his dream came true. Had a great view on gender stereotypes also ( )
