This story is about a young Navajo boy named Kee, who, with his family, is being forced to leave their ancestral home in Arizona for an internment camp almost 300 miles away. Kee's father is not with them, so Kee helps to care for his mother, grandmother, and sister on the long, difficult journey. They end up staying at the internent camp for four years before being allowed to return to their home. Kee makes many discoveries about himself and others, and he wonders if he will ever be able to return to their old way of life. This book is approved by the Council for Indian Education. Navajo Long Walk is the story of Kee, a young boy who traveled this long, arduous route with his mother, grandmother, sister and what few domestic animals they could bring. Over the four-year period, Kee learns to adapt to his inhospitable surroundings. Ultimately, Kee realizes the frailty of his people in the presence of the white soldiers and that to survive, they must find a way to get along with the white man.
