While the writing was done really well, it lack a certain clarity. I often lost complete focus on what was being written about and re-read the same parts over and over trying to figure them out. Interesting subject, but the book needed more clarifying information for some parts.Cette critique a été rédigée pour LibraryThing Member Giveaways. Romanticism and Postromanticism reads like what I suspect it is: a PhD dissertation (or perhaps even a Master's thesis). This explains some of the things noted by other readers, such as the dry style, a bibliography that suggests 'a survey of current scholarship,' and a division into two "parts," one presenting groundwork and the other the writer's own ideas. There's certainly nothing wrong with dissertations becoming published books; indeed, that's where a lot of great academic books originated. But this one needed a good editor. I have to agree with the reviewer who found it confusing. At times, I felt like I was being talked down to, yet at other times, I felt I was expected to have knowledge that was very specialized (and I have a decent familiarity with the English branch of Romanticism). Perhaps I'm just the wrong reader for the book; or perhaps the word "philosophy" ought to have been included in the title to give a more accurate idea of its focus. Cette critique a été rédigée pour LibraryThing Member Giveaways. The focus is on literature in the first half of the book. Covering some of the big names in Romantic literature. Little focus is spent on painters and other artists in the field of Romanticism. The first half is more like a text book and something akin to what you would find in your average English class. Then a sudden shift happens, and we are now in Post-romanticism, and the book falls a little off the edge. It tries to explain what it means by Post-romanticism, and the connections with Romanticism. But it lacks in clarity and breath. This is a short work, that could have been made better if the sections on Post-romanticism were made longer. Originally I had anticipated this book would be more textbook-ish. No so! In addition to finding it a solid, well-researched work in an historical sense, I was pleasantly surprised by Moscovici’s attention to the philosophical aspects. Originally I wanted to read this book for its historical side, but ended up enjoying it even more than I expected because of its emphasis on philosophy. This book made me think and I learned a lot … I liked that! aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Claudia Moscovici asserts in Romanticism and Postromanticism that the Romantic heritage, far from being important only in a historical sense, has philosophical relevance and value for contemporary art and culture. With an emphasis on artistic tradition as a continuing source of inspiration and innovation, she touches upon each main branch of philosophy: aesthetics, epistemology, and ethics. The book begins by describing some of the most interesting features of the Romantic movement that still fuel our culture. It then addresses the question: How did an artistic movement whose focus was emotive expression change into a quest for formal experimentation? And finally, Moscovici considers the aesthetic philosophy of postromanticism by thinking through how the Romantic emphasis upon beauty and passion can be combined with the modern and postmodern emphasis on originality and experimentation.
