Heh. Santa Claus is a nasty beastie.

Overtime is a fun little story about the Horrors of Christmas and builds just a bit more onto the world of the Laundry Files. It's weird how much authority the night watchman has, but it also makes a certain kind of sense.

While I tend to like novels more than short stories, I'm not sure this would have been able to use the extra space. Nicely self contained.

I particularly liked the wibbly wobbly bits towards the end. Cosmic horror tends more towards alternate realities than true time travel, and I think this was an amusing example there of. ( )

Short story where Bob Howard pulls Christmas Night Duty at the Laundry. And during Christmas a lot of children wants someone to give them gifts. ( )

This short story/novella had a lot of build, which made it seem like it was going to be this awesome invasion story, dragged towards the end and was a bit of a let-down from the beginning. However, this is a definite read for Christmas and a wonderful alternative to the usual sappy Christmas story. Besides, you have to know if a paper-pusher stuck on night watch due to some bad luck can really save the world from... well, you won't believe it when you read the story! ( )

Re-read 3/28/18:

The weather outside (the universe) is frightful, but the fire (of the furnace) is so delightful, and since we've got no place to go (in time), let it snow (stack overflow), let it snow (stack overflow), let it snow (stack overflow).

Original Review:

My favorite kind of christmas story: gibbering nameless horrors leaving gifts in stockings. ( )

All bureaucracies obey certain iron laws, and one of the oldest is this: get your seasonal leave booked early, lest you be trampled in the rush.
