Description :
The BCRI is an interpretive museum and research center devoted to understanding the historic U.S. Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and '60s as well as contemporary struggles for human rights. Located adjacent to two historic landmarks (Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and Kelly Ingram Park), the institute anchors the city's Civil Rights District. It features both permanent and rotating exhibitions.

The BCRI Archives preserve movement-related documents and artifacts, including oral history resources. The Archives share the Birmingham Public Library Archives computer network.

The BCRI is a Smithsonian affiliate, a host in the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, and a member of the North American Reciprocal Museums program.
