- Writopia Lab offers small writing workshops for children aged 8-18. Writopia Lab was created in 2007 to address the unmet needs of aspiring young writers. This after-school young writers’ community provides a welcoming and inspiring environment for children and teens to hone their skills and deepen their love of language. Children come to Writopia because they have a passion for writing that is not addressed elsewhere. They stay because they find encouragement and confidence among like-minded children and are nurtured by exceptional teachers.
In order to reach all interested children, tuition fees are paid on a sliding scale and, in an effort to include children at-risk and in need, many of Writopia’s members are admitted to the community at a large discount and often tuition is waived entirely. This year, Writopia also began weekly workshops in partnership with the New York Public Library at various library branches in under-served communities.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards annually recognizes Writopia for submitting “the most outstanding group of submissions on the National level” to the Scholastic Art and Writing competition (the oldest and one of the most prestigious national youth writing competitions).
Each year since 2009, Writopia kids have won Best Play awards in every category in the Stephen Sondheim Young Playwrights Competition.
In addition to consistently winning national and regional recognition in prestigious writing competitions, Writopia students’ works are regularly accepted for publication in magazines, books and online.
Through the generosity of David Letterman’s Worldwide Pants Production Company, Writopia has, over the past three years, held a playwrights festival featuring our students’ plays, monologues and poetry performed by professional actors in Off-Broadway venues. - Ajouté par
