Description :
This is the main public library for Birmingham, serving branch libraries and affiliated libraries throughout Jefferson County. It occupies two downtown buildings joined by a pedestrian bridge.

The East Building, built in 1984, houses the main library, an art gallery, computers, and a second-hand bookstore. There is reserved parking for library patrons in the lot behind the building. The atrium has vending machines.

The Linn-Henley Building, built in 1927 and renovated in 1985, houses the non-circulating research library and archives. The research library focuses on southern history and genealogy. The archives hold more than 14,000 linear feet of primary documents dating from the 18th century to the present. The Rucker Agee Map Collection consists of printed maps of the American South from the 16th century on.

When you enter either building, a security guard may briefly inspect any large bag or backpack.

The BPL has been a free public library since 1908, governed by a municipal board since 1913. The entire collection was destroyed when a fire consumed City Hall in 1925. The library reopened in 1927 in what is now the Linn-Henley Building. The BPL has shared materials with county libraries since 1978, adopting a unified catalog in 1985.

During the prolonged Jefferson County fiscal crisis, including municipal bankruptcy in 2011, the library has faced severe budget cuts and has appealed for donations. Three branch libraries have closed since 2010. After an April 2011 tornado destroyed the Pratt City branch library, its collection and community archive were moved to the main library until the branch was rebuilt in 2014.

The county's prolonged fiscal crisis has delayed overdue renovations. In 2015 the escalators in the main building stopped working; they will not be repaired. There are two elevators, but one is out of order. The fire stairs are open all the time now. They are somewhat steep.

The Linn-Henley Research Library is an outstanding resource for southern history and genealogy, located in the original city library building, joined to the main library by an elevated walkway. You cannot check out books from the Linn-Henley collection. The highly decorated reading room is a great place to study. Archives are in the basement.
