‘Whilst I was walking in the lovely Fitzroy Gardens, the elm-trees and the plane-trees and the poplars said, "Call it the Hill of Content".’
Some thought A.H. Spencer foolhardy to establish a fine bookshop at the top end of Bourke Street. In the early 1920s this area was regarded as the darkest part of Melbourne, frequented by gangsters and where it was not uncommon to hear gunshots echo through the night. Surely he would be broke in no time.
Spencer decided to go ahead with his dream anyway and he was not the only one to believe that culture could be brought to the Bourke Street hill. "Thomas’ Fine Music" was also established in 1922, as was the wonderful "Grossi Florentino" restaurant.
The "Hill of Content" has seen Melbourne grow and change over the past 84 years and has ridden the city’s highs and lows.
We are proud to say our store now reflects its proud heritage. It is fully stocked with the city’s finest collection of "books with distinction" and we have now expanded to include an entire floor of books on the arts, classics and poetry. This part of our shop showcases the exquisite books published by the world's leading Art book publisher Thames & Hudson.
