Here is a BBC site exploring the newly redone Vatican library. Glorious pictures.

Your tithe dollars at work (and put to good use).

Wonderful. I'm surprised they only spent 9 million Euros-- sounds low. Can't imagine the Vatican Library gets too far behind in maintenance/ tech/ etc. I own a book that used to be in the Vatican Library, does anyone else?

benjclark: What book is that? And how did you acquire it?

Perhaps during the last sack of Rome?

A deaccessioned book from The Babysitter's Club?

wow. That's impressive. What sorts of books are included in the Vatican Library? I'd imagine it must be somewhat restricted to only certain categories.

They have all sorts of items in their collection. Treaties with extraterrestrials, the correct maps of Lasseter's Reef and El Dorado. The contract they signed with Dan Brown to write a book about them. The 'contract' they 'took out' on Dan Brown after he published The Da Vinci Code, etc &etc.

Those Italians loved their libraries. In last Sunday's WSJ Magazine was a story about the Duke of Urbino's cabinet of contemplation. It is finished in a woodworking technique called intarsia. Sigh. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204542404577157201834106634.html?m...

Love that stuff! There is a similar room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, if that's closer to you than Urbino!

Fabulous! I've been in the public areas of the Vatican Library, but, alas, am not a scholar doing post-graduate research.... I'd just want to browse the stacks anyway!
