glad to report that when i visited the bookseller today the shelves devoted to fiction (located in the back of the store) are expanding.

while other stores are closing, and dozens of articles appear about the death of fiction, it was heartwarming to see Strands investing more space to fiction.

this is still the best bookstore in NYC.

they are creeping out to the left side in the back- they have added two more long aisles of fiction.

This is good to know. I'm coming to NYC in March and the Strand was on my to do list. I've not been to the Strand since 1982.

>8 varielle: Varielle, how was your visit to the Strand?

I made the mistake of going on a Saturday. Elbow to elbow people made it almost impossible to browse. I did come away with a reprint of the Codex Seraphinianus found while trying to make my way to the bathroom.

It's still one of the best bookstores on the planet, and I still love the Strand - but I have to note that it is definitely shifting itself from "the place to find half-price review copies of recently published books" in the direction of "just another big bookstore with modest discounts".

(...Given that I can now get discounted books without leaving my couch, I increasingly wonder why I need to schlep into midtown Manhattan to achieve much the same results....)

I get what you say but is Browsing the shelves that presents surprises along the way.
