August Readathon: Reading In Public

I've started the wiki page to sign up.

So, reading in public. What book? Where will you go?

Yay, another readathon! Perfect. This is excellent incentive for me to finish up my ERs and then I'll start my yearned for Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay. I'll be reading at a canal-side park just down the road, where lots of people picnic and boaters wait for the lock. It's becoming one of my favourite spots this summer. And I'll wear my lovely red LibraryThing t-shirt with delight. Since they'll be on sale, I might just have to order a second one ;-)

In the other thread, the question came up, "How can we let the people who see us know what we are doing?" "How can we identify our ReadaThing? Table cards? Badges?"

I made a very simple bookcover that can be seen/read from a distance... and that's key.. it can be seen from a bit of a distance... not necessarily across the street, but people will be able to read it without bothering you.

It is sized for a standard small paperback, because most people can only print on standard 8.5 X 11 paper. (for other sizes just do a fit-to-print and it should work fine)

Another reason for the simplicity is that you can "customize" it... your choice for paper color!! and if you are so inclined, you can decorate it, too... with markers or crayons or stickers... just realize that if it is too "busy" then people won't be able to quickly see the LT logo!!

Next time we can have a ReadaThing bookcover for our ReadaThing-thon, but for now.....

I'm so excited that there's another read-a-thon, I missed the last one and really wanted to participate.

And I read in public all the time, so this will be easy. (Actually got harassed at a bar a few weeks ago by this guy who was apparently flabbergasted that my book was more interesting than his sparkling wit.)

Yes I signed up!! I may just make sure I go to the pool that day and just read there instead of swimming... Now I just need to finish my current ER book and decide what book to pick up next... I am so excited for this!!

This read-a-thon corresponds with the first day of my vacation. I'm already dreaming about where I can read...and relax...and read...

Looking forward to the Readathing and adding a new T to my collection. I will wear mine on 22 Aug all day. I signed up for the ReadAThing, I'll read at my local coffee shop, not sure what I will read just yet. Plan on printing out the bookcover to show my support, too.

Just signed up for my first Readathing. Took an early slot, I'll be reading in the park while my dogs play. Lots of joggers and dog walkers to see me.

I'm always reading in public - while on the train, sitting in a cafe, while waiting for someone who is trying on clothes! I just can't help myself - I always carry a book with me, just in case!

I will actually in London (I'm from Sydney, Australia) for the August readathing - my first trip overseas. I decided on the YHA Hostel at St Pancras as my accommodation because it is directly opposite the British Library! I arrive the day before the readathing so will still be getting over my jetlag, so reading will be a great way to spend the day, and I will be there by myself, so I won't feel as though I am ignoring anyone.

This is what I'm thinking -
* Start with breakfast at the hostel (or nearby cafe) and read my book (still deciding on which books (and how many) to take on my trip, but am definitely taking If this is man by Primo Levi as I will be visiting Auschwitz later in my trip).
* Then head over to the British Library and read in the open area at the entrance to the library.
* Then I might start some of my sight-seeing of London (taking along my book, of course) - maybe reading while waiting for the London Eye, reading in front of Big Ben, reading while waiting for the Tube.

Any other suggestions?

Right I've signed up. I suspect I will still be reading The Passage by Justin Cronin. As to where....hmmmm...the joint was jumping at Palace Barracks last weekend so maybe there would be good. At a coffee shop or a book shop - Avid Reader would be good - out the back - where I participated in a knit-in a couple of weeks ago.

Someone posted a comment on the blog post about a reading in public thing a group in British Columbia did last summer.

I think I'll be joining in too. I hope I won't be the only one in Belgium to participate. I haven't decided yet where I will read. The park, probably. I hope it won't be an rainy day ;-)

good idea... but you can also add it... use a red or purple or any color marker or crayon.

I've been playing with the bookcover and it is getting too visually busy. It has to be visible & readable from a distance.

I'm definitely in . . . but due to health reasons can never sign up for a specific hour ahead of time.
I've put the date on my calendar and plan to read in public for an hour at a couple of different times during the day: in my backyard (if it is not too hot) and/or on my front porch and/or at a local coffee shop.

Wish there was a way to identify other LTers who live near me (I'm in Minneapolis), though I'm more of a "lone reader" than a "social reader" . . .

I'm trying to figure out where I'm going to read in public. I'm in a small town & almost everything in my area is closed on Sunday.... except the library!! So, I might go there. The park is nice, so that's a possibility, too. I haven't decided where to go yet.

Maybe McD's with my headphones?

Looks like the list is pretty well filled up, so I'm not going to pick a time either. This is because (I just discovered) that day I'm taking a trip with my parents up to Lake Tahoe, and I have exactly no clue what time I'll have free to read. Unfortunately I can't read in the car (makes me sick), so that won't work - probably some time before dinner (after dinner we're going to a play). I'll post afterward when and what I read.

An idea for Bookcrossers:

While reading in public, have a basket of Bookcrossing-registered books near-by and available for others to take (for free) if they choose to join you in reading at the same time!

That is a great crossover idea! I see myself with a basket of books, tossing them out like a flower girl at a wedding. I'm a social gal, so I think it would be hard not to want to talk about reading instead of actually reading if I were with a group.

Can we start a new section on the wiki page, with open invitations of public gatherings?

I like that we have enough people signed up that if you don't know when you'll have time, you can just fill it in afterwards. Of course, I'd like the satisfaction of seeing all the names beforehand, but that's not very realistic.

Question. What is the "purpose" of the Readathon? (Other than a way to persuade my parents that I am, no, not wasting time, I am participating in an international community thing...... :D)

There's also the Book It reason -- that this is a motivator to take time to read, to schedule time to read. It's like having a very loose book club.

It's an event to look forward to, for those who don't enjoy being overly social.

I'm in. I'll take the 1am slot which is still empty. It'll actually be 10pm for me on Saturday night which actually works out better for me than participating on Sunday. I'm pretty sure I can convince my husband to join in as well if I take him to San Remo's, a Greek restaurant with great nibblies. Before kids we used to enjoy the occasional quiet time together reading in restaurants. For some reason it's not something we think of doing together since having kids.

#2 -katylit, you made me think of Three Men in a Boat when he talks about the locks/canals they go through and all the goings on around them. They sound like wonderful spots bring a picnic and a book.

I think for this time, rather than sign up, I'll write it on my calendar so I won't forget, and see what my work schedule is on that day. I never know ahead of time. I'll try to come by after, if I manage to participate, and tell the where, what and when of it. I love that this will be going on all around me. :)

Great idea, I'll be joining in. How about starting a Facebook event page for it? People can invite their friends list and the word can be spread around. Especially good tool if public gatherings are happening. I see the LT fan page is becoming more active on Facebook, would they consider creating one?

This sounds like fun. I can't sign up for a specific time, since I don't know my work schedule for August 22nd yet, but I'll definitely plan to be Reading in Public for at least an hour, probably in the evening, at a restaurant, Denny's or Friendly's maybe.

I'm ordering a t-shirt today, so will plan to wear that.

Wish I knew if there were others here in Portland, Maine, that will be reading. We could sit and read together...

I don't know if I'll be able to actually read in public that day as we're in a "Guy on vacation every week this month" period, so I'm doing a lot of 6 day weeks. May come down to grabbing a chair and reading outside my house that morning before I go to sleep.

All the same, not being one to turn down a deal for something good, I got one of each T-shirt. :)

I would love to do this thing, but I'm afraid that wiki-whacky is more than I want to try to figure out. I've looked at it 2 or 3 times since it was first put up, and I just don't have the patience. Isn't there an easier way to do it? Why is it important to have a "schedule"? I would think with as many people as LT has, the odds are most times would be covered anyway, and I would have to pick a time based on what else was going on in my life, not on what hours were open on the chart. (Yes, I'm a little grumpy today, but I think these are valid questions.) I realize participation doesn't require the signing up; but I don't see any of my regular LT contacts on this thread or on the schedule, and I wonder if that isn't indicative of a lack of Will to Wiki, rather than a lack of interest in the event itself.

Looks to me as though all the time slots already have at least one person signed up, so I'm not going to try.

The place I work is in the process of moving and the schedules will be completely haywire for that week.

Sure do wish there was someone else in the Portland Maine area who wanted to Read in Public with me though... whenever that turns out to be.

I don't think there's any problem at all with doubling up on slots - redundancy is good!

It occurred to me that it might be good to have some "LibraryThing business cards" to hand out to people who see me reading in public and want to know more . . .
Just a little business-card-sized version of the sign or the saying from the t-shirt. Maybe with a space where I could jot down my username (if the person doesn't seem too creepy :)

Does this already exist? If not, I'd be happy to make a template, but I'm not sure what the LT font is . . .

In the meantime I'll look around the site to see what I can find . . .

I've got a couple of possibilities for public reading locations: restaurants, coffee shop, library, maybe even Light Rail Transit.
Will try to finish up the Early Reviewers book from a couple of months back that I've been having a hard time finishing.

The plan was to go to a restaurant and read for my hour, but I ended up having to stay home with the kids. My hour is actually 10pm Saturday night here. Put the kids to bed, drew the curtains wide, and read for an hour in front of the windows in my usual reading spot: curled up under a blanket on the sofa, this time with a cup of Lung Ching tea beside me.

I started Fire by Kristin Cashore, which is the second book in the series, though chronologically it's the first. I've already, briefly, met the one and only character that also shows up in Graceling and I find myself instantly on edge wondering what mischief he'll get up to this time. And there seem to be some differences between the magics in Fire and Graceling which I can't wait to read more about.

Sorry for being slack and posting so late....I had a very restful hour at Avid Reader at West End reading The Passage by Justin Cronin pp 204 - 236.....over a vege turkish toasted sanger and a flat white ....pure indulgence.....browsed amongst the books afterwards.....searching for the soundtrack to Me and Orson Welles.....have placed an order.....over to you ....

Signing up kinda late, but I'm planning on reading this afternoon on the porch and hoping it's not too damp (it's raining here).

Reading tonight 10p-midnight out on the porch, starting Library Paradox. Glad to be a part of this event!

Anyway, I just added the ReadaThing notice to the home page. I'm looking forward to my 5pm spot. I'm reading Mary Roach's new book Packing for Mars for an interview with her, so it's a double shot of getting work done, and reading a book about a subject I love, by an author I adore!

Well it is raining here so now I need to figure out where to go to read... I really hate taking books outside when it is raining. I have a few books I want to read during the hour just not sure if I will be able to read a part of all of them or if I will just stick with one. These are the books that I plan to try and read some of during my hour: King Lear by William Shakespeare, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, and Julie and Julia by Julie Powell.

Now I am off to find a place to read. I won't be able to post anything until I get back because I am not going have a computer with me and I don't know if I will be able to type on my Iphone.

Went out this morning to do my reading . . . of course I remembered everything except my camera, so you'll have to take my word for it :)

My plan was to read The Company of Heaven: Stories from Haiti, but just before I was going out to read, the latest (and last) chapter of The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins arrived via email. So I printed it out and put it in my bag with my Readathing Covers and table signs and business cards! Off I went in my LT t-shirt.

First I went to Maria's Cafe for a large Raisin & Walnut pancake to sustain me. Did a bit of reading of TWIW while waiting for my food. Had my sign on the table.

Next I went to Blue Moon (a favorite local coffee shop) got a large half-caf latte and set up there for about an hour. This time I had all my signage on the table.

All in all I was reading TWIW in public for about 1 hour between 9:45 am and 11:30 am CDT US.

No one asked me about what I was doing, but several folks glanced at the sign and/or my t-shirt.

Hope everyone else has a good read.

The coffee shop was closed, so instead of going back home, I went to the library! no coffee, but semi-comfortable chairs.

I started Silver Pigs by Lindsey Davis. A friend has read them & recommended them.... so I bit. Fairly good so far... different style or attitude, but I'm willing to give it a try.

So, not an exciting read, but a quiet one!

I have done my duty this morning, under Saint Hermes church tower in my home town Ronse (Belgium). Only for about half an hour, as I didn't get out of bed early. I read some chapters in Wees niet bang by Norwegian writer Anne Holt. Good book. Finished it about fifteen minutes ago.

I finished my hour before I went grocery shopping. There is a Starbucks in the grocery store so I just got a bottle of water and a lemon loaf cake and sat down in the empty dining area and read. I didn't print out the sign because I forgot. I did wear my LT t-shirt. I read parts of 4 books during the hour. I read King Lear by William Shakespeare, Julie and Julia by Julie Powell, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.

A few people walked by and looked at me while I was reading but otherwise it was very uneventful.

While waiting for my younger son to finish a longboard race I did an hour I had not planned, sitting on a bench on the riverbank with joggers and dogwalkers and longboarders and the segway tour and such cruising by. I'm a little worried that the weather for my original hour will not be good enough to read outdoors, so I'll do that one as well, but possibly indoors. I was reading Imager's Intrigue.

I forgot this was going on today,but I did read in the park today for about an hour while my boyfriend was playing soccer. I read part of Middlemarch and part of Distant Trails by Bill Gulick.

I just got back from my hour+ of reading at my favorite diner. I read some more Sherlock Holmes as part of my goal to read all of Doyle's novels and short stories about the famous detective.

I had family come from out of town this weekend so I didn't get to participate like I had hoped. I tried to talk my nephew into doing it with me -- he loves to read and is reading The Ranger's Apprentice, but he opted to play video games instead. Dang.

I read The Eyes of the Dragon while I was waiting in line in a drive-through and finished it at home. I also got to read it on Friday for about half an hour in a restaurant waiting for my late friends.

I've got my t-shirt on at least!

Spent the last hour at Starbucks reading Black Coffee by Agatha Christie. I felt that was an appropriate choice from my collection of unread books. Got my t-shirt on and enjoyed myself tremendously, although I didn't talk to anyone, except a friend who stopped by because he thought he promised to keep me company.

I was not able to commit to a time, but I was able to read from 7:00- 8:00 p.m. EST at the Penn Book Store in Phila delphia, Pa.. It 's not far from home. Lots of people were reading around us. I had my daughter and niece
accompany me. I read What Looks Like Crazy On An Ordinary Day by Pearl Cleage.

finished my second hour - more of Imager's Intrigue. I started out on the front step but it started raining so I moved indoors and read sitting by the front window.

I just finished my hour at the local Barnes & Noble cafe - got a tea and a muffin and read my ER book, Elizabeth's Women: friends, rivals and foes who shaped the Virgin Queen.

I read part of one from my keeper shelves Blood Price by Tanya Huff. I was recommending the series to a friend and thought I should re-read the first one so that I could discuss it if neccessary :)

I read for two hours and 4 minutes at the Olive Garden Restaurant, starting around 7:00 PM, the first hour and 20 minutes in the lobby while I waited for a table with a pager that apparently wasn't working. The staff were so upset that they had left me sitting there so long that they gave me my meal for free. I really only knew how long I'd been waiting since I hit the stopwatch on my phone when I sat down to wait for a table, with the book I was Reading in Public, Shall We Tell the President? by Jeffrey Archer. Of course I turned the stopwatch off again while they finally found me a table and while I was ordering, and turned it back on while I was reading while waiting for my meal, so I knew how long I actually read.

My waitress noticed my BookCrossing earrings and my Library Thing t-shirt and asked if I was a librarian. I explained that I was not and told her about the Library Thing Read-a-Thon and about BookCrossing too. I enjoyed my first Reading in Public Read-a-Thon.

Well, my day certainly didn't turn out as planned. My husband had to take the car, so I couldn't go the the locks as I'd hoped, it was raining, so I couldn't even go outside! But I did put on my LT t-shirt and sit by the window and read for much longer than my prescribed one hour. But we live in the country and the house is surrounded by trees, so I'm not really sure if anyone really saw me :-(

My only consolation is that I read in public all the time, at work (really! it's part of my job), at the doctor's office, in line at the grocery store...you get the idea. And I do wear my LT t-shirt to work on occasion too, telling everybody who's interested, and probably lots who aren't, all about LT!

Too hot here yesterday to read outside, let alone go anywhere, and anyway I hadn't signed up, but I did spend several hours reading A guide to early Irish law.

Like katylit, I read in public all the time. I didn't sign up for the Read-a-thon, but I was with you all in spirit. It poured rain on Sunday, and I couldn't budge myself out of the house. (Does my husband count as "public"?) But I read at the hairdresser's on Saturday, waiting for my appointment, wearing my LT T-shirt, which never fails to get a comment or question from somebody. And I read at the insurance agency on Monday, waiting my turn to talk to the agent about a discount I don't seem to be getting. And quite likely this evening I will read at the bowling alley snack bar while eating one of their incredible cheeseburgers, before my league starts at 7:00.

I was reading a park in Edinburgh, Scotland this summer. :)

If I had known that though, I could have stayed home and read with my six cats. That would have been public enough too, I suppose :)

But I wouldn't have been able to participate on sunday so it's even better that I didn't find out in time...

Finally checking in - my internet's been spotty this week. I read for half an hour from 1850 to 1920 PDT (6:50 pm to 7:20 pm, Pacific time) while waiting for a play to begin, sitting with my family in lovely padded Adirondack chairs at Sand Harbor Beach on Lake Tahoe. Unfortunately, the play was very bad and I wished I could have gone away and read some more, but by the time it started it had gotten dark.

I read (a little bit of) Stormy Petrel by Mary Stewart. No time to read all week! I'm still not finished.
