Anyone explain to me why Turkey, a non-EU country, could affect the EU economy so much? Why the large bailout funds, even from the US through the IMF?

Turkey's Prime Minister was recently asked why his country was such a friend of Palestine e.g. flotilla. He replied that they were friends of all countries in the area. Uumh! Interesting response.
