So, wanting to familiarize myself with the Dewey Decimal System (DDS) before beginning to post my personal list, I've started by familiarizing myself with The System. Even though I've practically lived in one library or another my entire life, I really wasn't all that familiar with the structure and meaning of the DDS. Though sinking to a new level of geekdom, I have to admit that it is really, really cool.

200 Religion
300 Social sciences
400 Language
500 Science
600 Technology
700 Arts & recreation
800 Literature

Good luck sorting things out. I kept remembering books I'd forgotten I'd read for the first month or so after I started the challenge.

If you're planning on using touchstones to update the list, you might want to abandon this thread and start a new one that puts each set of ten sections into a separate post. Otherwise it takes forever to load each time you want to update your list.

Thanks for the welcome fundevogel!

I'm not even close being able to keep track of what I've read so far; I'm still trying to figure out how the DDS hierarchy works. So far it's been a blast.

Thanks for the info on touchstones. Saw that you started a new thread because touchstones were taking too long to load. I will definitely post in sections as you have...once I get there. :)

So the hierachy makes for ten primary or "main' classes, 100 divisions and 1000 sections.

So most books will start with a number related to a broad subject area and then additional numbers are added to note more and more specific information about the book, e.g., (per Wikipedia) a book concerning the European Economy would likely have a DDS number of 330.94. i.e., 330 for economics + .9 for geographic treatment, or, more spefically, .94 for European geography.

Letters get added to the DDC number to differentiate books with the same number. The letters that get added are usually the first few letters from the author's last name.

Apparently, Arabic numerals are sometimes used to represent each class in the DDS. Hm.

Following Carlym's advice, I will post only 10 categories at a time for my actual DDC count so that the touchstones don't take absolutely forever to upload.

That project will just have to wait for tomorrow night, as I've got some work work to return to.

You already have tons done! You should count up how many overall and how many sections you've completed.

I think I'll do that right now. I considered doing it at midnight last night but was able to shut off my OCD enough to get to bed. :)

Maybe we should have gotten degrees in library sciences or something...

000s-4 out of 100
100s-14 out of 100
200s-20 out of 100
300s-23 out of 100
400s-10 out of 100
500s-7 out of 100
600s-9 out of 100
700s-7 out of 100
800s-31 out of 100
900s-10 out of 100

133 out of 1000
63 out of 100

The count leaves me with the following questions:

How are you all handling the unassigned categories?
Are you counting those as read? There are still some older books out their with "unassigned" numbers in some instances. I wouldn't want to loose the ability to track those as well.

Any ideas?

If anyone is feeling bored and looking for something to do, please feel free to check count. I tried to be accurate, but I imagine I've made multiple mistakes even in doing so.

>42 Voracious_Reader:: I'm reducing the denominator unless I read one in those categories; then I add one to the numerator and one back to the denominator. Especially for the "no longer used" categories, some books are still assigned to the unused ones.

45lorax
Mai 23, 2010, 4:02 pm

I'm ignoring unassigned categories unless I've read a book in them -- so if there are 89 assigned categories in a section, I'll count out of 89, rather than 100. If I then read something in an unassigned category, I'd count out of 90. I think that's what most people are doing -- there's no wrong way, but counting dozens of categories as read just because they're unassigned doesn't seem meaningful to me.

I'm ignoring them for now - just counting categories actually read out of 100. I guess I'll count them as "read" when that's all I need to finish out a section. But on my private progress report, where I keep track of percentage complete for the entire challenge, I am taking them out of the denominator.

From the OCLC's Classify service:

That 741.5 is ridiculous...unless it refers to a comic book version, in which case it shouldn't have been packed in with the novel in the graph anyway.

You should look for other books about Islam other than a book that is simply an attack on the religion.

You may want to check out "Misquoting Jesus" the truth about Jesus.

I'm always interested in book recommendations, but I wasn't 100% sure which of the books I've listed offended you. I looked back through the thread of comments and didn't see any particular thread/mention of books other than lists of things read (at least here).

Please share.

We're still in the creating-a-list-to-vote-on phase. I've asked that they send me their suggestions by tomorrow. Once I get the suggestions, I've set up a blog with HTML that will let them vote thumbs up or thumbs down on books (requesting them to vote thumbs down on only two). I'll add you as a registered reader to the blog and send you the URL once it's up and going so that you can see it and the list of possibilities.

The details page for each book will show the number, if LT has that info: http://www.librarything.com/work/4904/details

It looks like the system is overwhelmed by the number of touchstones in some of the posts. Maybe just use a touchstone for the first book in each category?

65lorax
Nov 2, 2010, 2:31 pm

63, 64>

Both LoC and the LT consensus (which isn't terribly reliable anymore; I liked it much better back when you could see all the options) give 820.9; 820 is the generic "English literature" category, and it seems like a good option for where a non-fiction book about English literature would go. So that's where I would put it, as well.
