I've been struck with a desire to read some Lovecraft. I've never read any of his work before.... where should I start?

My personal favourite is The Case of Charles Dexter Ward but if you want to get into the Cthulhu Mythos I should try either At the Mountains of Madness or The Haunter of the Dark All great reads

You can browse here :-

Lovecraft Collected Stories - http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks06/0600031.txt

and Wikisource has a few assorted others, too.

To see if anything might catch your fancy.

At the Mountains of Madness and The Dunwich Horror are also good collections of stories with which to start.

I would start with preparing for the racism accusations, which nowadays will be encountered by most fans of Lovecraftian horror and Cthulhu roleplaying. Beyond that, cool stories, which I remember worthy stand-alones:

Dreams in the Witch House
The Horror at Red Hook
The Mountains of Madness
The Dunwich Horror
Shadows over Innsmouth

"Nah! Pietroschek. Yeah, read my Cthulhu stuff. Lovecraft is dead, I must still pay bills..?" ;-)
