I just today found your group and joined. It seems to me that if anyone could answer this question, someone(s) in this group could.

I want to re-read Anna Karenina. The copy I have was translated by Constance Garnett. I like her translation; I think it's probably the one I read the first time I read this book 20-odd years ago. I see there's a modern translation by Joel Carmichael who has evidently standardized the Russian names.

Question: Has anyone read the Carmichael translation? Does anyone have a recommendation for one translation over another. I realize there are other translations out there--the Maude translation that Norton uses. What do you think?

The best is probably the most recent, by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky.

Great. Thanks very much. It's a Kindle book, so that will give me a chance to sample it for free. I'll give it a look.
