Any series you wish was more popular/licensed?

I wish History's Strongest Disciple(manga) would get licensed. I have no idea why it isn't

I wish Nurse Angel Ririka were licensed and available in English (both in manga and anime format). However, as it is an out of print magical girl series that started in 1996, ran for four volumes, and seems to have enjoyed only marginal popularity I can't say as I'm too particularly hopeful it will ever get an official English release.

I so wish to see Saiunkoku Monogatari and Glass Mask getting licensed. Those are the ones that I think are not so popular or well known.

As for other series, I want Hoshi wa Utau by Natsuki Takaya, Tokyo Crazy Paradise by Yoshiki Nakamura, and Cat Street by Yoko Kamio.

Licensed for release outside of Japan. Non-Japanese companies like Tokyopop and FUNimation need to pay the Japanese companies for the right to produce and release an English-language version of a manga or anime.

Well since I don't follow Japanese series I really don't know. I just watch/read the stuff that comes out in English (ok, I watch some dubbed stuff too if the english version is not available).

I wish Satisfaction Guaranteed was more popular because then TokyoPop might actually print the last volume. It is so annoying to be left hanging when you know there is just one more part left!

I wish Vampire Knight(anime) would get licenced. The manga is already licenced and it's one of the most popular shoujo mangas, so to me it really doesn't make any sense that it isn't.

For me: I would love to read Koori no Mamono no Monogatari (=The Ice-Cold Demon's Tale) by Shiho Sugiura. Since Silver Diamond is not doing so well (in the USA), it is probably a big wish..

I have heard of Vampire Knight before and I do own volume 3 (I bought it for $1.25CND). I should probably read the series at some point during the summer (I believe that my library also has the series). Though the anime would be nice, in general, I'd rather read the manga.

I really wish that Alive: The Final Evolution would be out already. They only have about seven or eight volumes released in the US and the series has already finished with 21 volumes. There's also been news about it becoming an anime series, which would've been awesome, but ,sadly, it was cut and never made. The series also doesn't get much love, which is sad because it's such an awesome series!!! And the art is really awesome too. T3T Gosh, I just want to finish it since I'm only two volumes from the ending!!! >_

I really wish that I Hate You More Than Anyone was more popular, but mainly because I want it to be an anime! I flipping love that series!

The Vampire Knight manga may be very popular, but that does not guarantee that the anime will be licensed in the USA. Actually, it isn't all that surprising that the anime remains unlicensed. While shoujo manga sells quite well, shoujo anime tend to be less successful in the US market.

An anime for I Hate You More than Anyone would be very awesome. It would also be neat if they could expand it to cover more of the Akiyoshi series currently not available in English and maybe V.B. Rose as well, since they all take place in the same world/universe/timeline.

yeah, I had read in the first book that I Hate You More than Anyone was part of some series about the akiyoshi family. it's times like those that I wish I could read japanese so I could get them!

I Hate You More than Anyone! is the fifth of the Akiyoshi Family series (or, so it was labeled on the tankoubon.. the other four have since been re-compiled into two volumes).. although it is the only one that spans more than one volume. Kazuha is still my favorite out of all of them, and I do love when she makes appearances in any of Hidaka Banri's stories. :3

I was unaware that the VK anime had been licensed. I hope it does well, sales-wise; what I said about shoujo anime not being as successful, in general, in the US market still holds true (particularly if television broadcasts are involved; the only really successful shoujo series I know of in a US television market has been Sailor Moon).

Glass Mask in English would be awesome...but like you, I doubt it will happen any time soon. Number of volumes and the art style probably don't help its cause.

I know that Swan was published originally in the same year as Glass Mask is being released in English by CMX but at a very slow pace 15 just came out in English in March and 16 is out in October. Sales for it may not be great though least they haven't dropped it.

I also want to see Aoi Hana in english.

I would do almost anything to see Weiβ: An Assassin and White Shaman, with all of it's wonderful artwork still intact, of course. I'd even be happy with just the sequel Weiβ Side B. ^_^

I'd also like to see someone pick up Haru wo Daiteita since Central Park Media collapsed and (to my knowledge) it is no longer being published by anyone.

I would love to see Rose of Versailles be picked up...its been licensed everywhere except and english speaking country, however most translations are highly censored.

Wouldn't mind seeing Mizuiro Jidai being picked up either...

i wish kare kano was more popular... so that they remain on the shelves of bookstores... i don't see it on any shelves anymore!! i want everyone just starting with manga to have the chance to see it while they're browsing and have their interests piqued. XD XD

I read Kare Kano about a month ago, and while I enjoyed it as I was reading it (in fact, I may have only slept the night I started it because I fell asleep over it), I can't remember a single thing about it, except that one of the alternate titles is "his and her circumstances", and that it follows the main girl and main boy through all of high school.

I'm usually pretty good at remembering at least the hook to a story as long as that one, but it was apparently completely unmemorable to me. I look up the series description about once a week, because it's always getting mentioned/recommended and I can never remember what it's about, despite knowing that I read it.

So I have to say "it's decent, but Lovely*Complex is better" (I read Lov*Con the week before I read KareKano and do remember that one, quite well even).

kare kano holds a special place in my heart... although i'd started collecting some manga and skimming through some random copies of ribon and nakayoshi in the 90s, i never really got serious about reading manga and starting to translate until i saw how the anime ended (this series and hana yori dango). it was also this series that made me try to seek out manga that hadn't been turned into an anime... or a drama. i think most fans of the series started out by watching the anime.. and then finding that the series stops abruptly, but continues on from vol 8 of the manga.

it starts off with a couple of overachievers who wear a mask of perfection. they didn't really have any real friends, at first... and have always striven to be #1 at their high school. miyazawa yukino is a so-called queen of vanity who wants to be #1 because she gets elated by all the praise she hears from others about her achievements; she goes to all lengths to achieve this. arima souichirou strives to be #1 in order to do his adoptive parents proud; he doesn't have to try as hard as yukino since he's some kind of a natural genius. anyway.. things happen. the cast grows to have a main group of about 10 close friends, each with their own quirky personalities.. and pretty much all of their backgrounds are covered. there is some angst in the latter half, but it has its funny moments that make up for it. one of the themes is finding, accepting, and being happy with yourself... another is relationship with friends and family... it really is mostly slice of life. (or a lot of slices of life)

the omnibus of vols 1-3 are all i ever seen in bookstores now, if they carry any of it at all. there are a total of 21 volumes and tokyopop has completed publishing the translated volumes for all of them. (interestingly, there is also a bilingual edition of the first volume... which contains BOTH the japanese and english text. i guess it was one way to learn english for japanese readers.. there are other titles that have bilingual editions.)

i really like love*com as well.. as much as i like pretty much all of nakahara aya's works since love! love! love! in '98.... she's funny and off-beat.. and always gives her stories *special* quirks.. (wth? a hamburger prince love story? - nanako robin - lol.)

Oh, yeah, Kare Kano is that one. I think I really liked the way the surrounding cast was done, and the angst didn't feel like it was just a plot device to fill space. (It was a bit melodramatic and all, but nowhere near the level of other shoujo manga. And it didn't make me want to claw my eyes out like Skip Beat! is doing.)

Until I read the summary just now, I was doing my best to remember the story and instead was remembering the one for High School Debut. (Which I think I read after Kare Kano? I don't even know anymore. I think Ouran High School Host Club is next on my list, if I'm going to keep trying to read the big name shoujo, though I've been avoiding it.)

And I love Nanako Robin! The hamburger prince love story was awesome. I thought the very beginning was kind of confusing, though, and quite a spurious reason to get the two MCs living in the same house - and it seems to have been forgotten in favor of another source of drama somewhere around the middle. But at least the series doesn't drag out for 20 volumes unnecessarily.

I think the reason that no one has picked up the Rose of Versailles is because the mangaka or the publisher wanted to much money for the license and none of the US publishers would want to pay the amount that they want. I've heard of this manga recently and it does sounds good but I don't think we will see it in English anytime soon. It was published in French and German at one point I think but it is long out print.

I wish Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou would be published over here. I'm not sure if I would trust it to Viz or Tokyopop, but I bet Del Rey would do it justice. But I don't think slice of life is in very high demand over here, and while the series has won some awards, it still doesn't seem that popular/well-known. It's definitely one of my favorites though, the pastel artwork, the apocalyptic state of the world that is only hinted at, and all of Alpha's wonder at everything. I've read through it so many times.

something that I wish was more popular, are those light novels. two of both ballad of a shinigami and pita ten came out, but no more ever got officially published out in the states! >_

Oh, I'm totally with you on that one! I would give almost anything for the Ghost Hunt light novels to be published in the states! But the only series that seem to be doing well are Vampire Hunter D and Trinity Blood. :( I feel like I should knock on wood, before saying that I'm really proud of Tokyopop for not completely abandoning their collection of light novels - I especially enjoy seeing a new volume of Twelve Kingdoms pop up every once-in-awhile.

For anime, I wish that Kenran Butoh Sai: The Mars Daybreak was more popular and I wish that Romeo's Blue Skies was licensed.

Light novels are kind of like short novels, but it's not really the length that defines them. Mostly they tend to be lighter fare and they include illustrations. I think also they tend to be marketed towards the YA crowd, though I'm not positive on that. Probably the best thing that defines a light novel, other than the sporadic illustrations, is the type of language used. It's easier and quicker to read than typical "literature".

A light novel is a style of Japanese novel primarily targeting Junior High and High School demographics. They are typically not more than 40-50,000 words long (the shorter ones being equivalent to a novella in US publishing terms), usually published in bunkobon size, and are often illustrated.

It has got to be more than that. Riyoko Ikeda has more recent works, and yet none of her titles have been brought over. Also, she's considered a pioneer of the shoujo and josei genres, and some consider her almost on par with Osamu Tezuka and she was a contemporary of Keiko Takemiya, both of which have had their older titles (manga and anime) licensed and continue to be licensed despite the older art styles.

Plus, Rose of Versailles is referenced in so many other titles, either on its own or because of its musical performances by Takarazuka.

Only thing I can think of is, Riyoko Ikeda doesn't want her works to be licensed.

Rose of Versailles has had an English adaptation, just not in the US, and it wasn't a complete translation. Indeed, this version, which was released in Japan, is out of print.

Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if it is a money issue.

I woud think though, some company would try considering Toei's plans for their new Rose of Versailles anime movie... assuming they ever finish it.

Please Save My Earth so Viz could do another print run and volume 13 wouldn't be so rare and ridiculously price. :|

I recommend getting on sites like paperbackswap (if your American) and Bookmooch and get on a waiting list in hopes that someone will send you the book.

ebay also has a few vendors selling multiple volumes together. You can always place a bid on those.

I hope that they licence series 3 of Spice and Wolf. The only issue is that while being beautifully well written and probably my favourite anime ever, it is not that popular. WHY ARE THE GOOD ONES NEVER POPULAR!!!!

I desperately want June' to license Youka Nitta's "Haru Wo Daiteita" (Embracing Love). After CPM folded and took BeBeautiful, their yaoi imprint, with them, a lot of great (and incomplete) series went off the market here. "Embracing Love" only reached 5 volumes, but there are 14 in the series. June' picked up Ayano Yamane's "Finder" series (another former license of BeBeautiful) and has had great success with that.

Dog & Scissors a comedy anime series. That stuff is amazing. Very funny. I wish the light novels would get licensed over here in North America by Yen Press. IMNOTskittlesquad, glad someone thinks so too. One Piece is overrated. Not that good. It isn't bad just average. There are far better anime/manga with better stories and character designs, no offense.
