I'm going to be in Boston the first week in August to visit the MFA and the Gardner and to attend a seminar. I'll be staying at the Midtown, near the conference.
Any advice as to good restaurants, interesting events, cool shops, etc. would be most welcome.
I don't suppose anyone knows of any good bookstores?

Heh. Bookstores in Boston? Nooo ...
Definitely visit the Brattle (9 West Street) and Commonwealth (under Old South Meetinghouse on Milk Street). There are some others too (there's a thread on this at http://www.librarything.com/topic/396 as well).
If you're up for a book-related exhibit, I just finished putting up "Gluttons for Books: John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Their Libraries" at the Massachusetts Historical Society (1154 Boylston Street). If you (or anyone else) want a tour, let me know, I'll be happy to show you the show.
Plenty of restaurants too - what's your pleasure? :-)
*Edited to fix an errant parenthesis.

You've missed the Rose Art Museum, which used to be one of the best small modern art museums, but fell victim to the economy.
You're a week too early for Boston Restaurant Week with its prix fixe bargains. Maybe the right question is what don't you have in Chicago that Boston does? From teh internets, it looks like you've got Afghan but not Burmese. (There's seafood, too, of course, but I'm no help there.)

Ooooh, that exhibit sounds wonderful! I will definitely be in touch closer to my arrival!
As to restaurants, I eat pretty much anything, but am especially fond of Italian food.

That's a shame. Small arts organizations in general are truly hard hit these days.
Seafood is good!

I'm gonna bow out and let your fellow seafood-loving omnivores help, but not before I mention that in with all the Italian restaurants in Boston's North End is an upscale vegan raw food restaurant.

I'm going to up and admit that I like taking folks to The Barking Crab for seafood. It's a bit hokey, and expensivey, but it's on the water and you get to smash your crab legs with a big rock (works better than you'd think).
