I am a new School Librarian, and I would like to locate some grant money so that I can update my collection (of which the average age is from 1971). Does anyone know of any helpful grants, or just places I can start to search? I am kind of overwhelmed as I begin the search on the internet... THANKS! :-)

You might apply for the We the People Bookshelf -- the grant period is over for this year, but they will start accepting applications for next year in the fall. It's not a big grant, but it would be a good starting place.

Amy,

We have a new book that might be of interest to you. "Granted! A Teacher’s Guide to Writing and Winning Classroom Grants" was written by Chris Taylor to help teachers, administrators, librarians, parents, and school volunteers discover new, nontraditional means to fund such projects. The book provides a step-by-step process to write and win classroom grants and is available through www.QueenofGrants.com.

Best,

~Linda

A related question and I wasn't sure where to ask. I have a friend who runs a struggling small press. Is there a source for grants available to little presses? His efforts are poetic and historical if that makes a difference.

>5 varielle: You might consider looking for local, regional, national (etc) grants for the arts, as an idea for small press support. This comes to mind because when reading books or checking out publications I'll often see little notes like "x thanks" or "this made possible by The Canada Council for the Arts" etc. I happen to be in Canada but there are probably others around.

How do smaller libraries acquire books? I've asked at the odd public library when bringing books by. Donated books tend to end up in book sales because there are procedures through which libraries get their materials. In my local public library though, I'll hit the odd book that has a sticker or something that names a donor. I would assume there's a procedure there as well? Ultimately, would someone looking for expand a library collection be best to ask for books or money to supplement a budget?

Dollar General and Target have literacy grants. DG is pretty easy. I've gotten at least 4 of them; I think you can get up to $4000. I've also had success getting Donor Choose grants.
