Are you going to post impressions or reviews of the books you read? I'd like to hear your opinion of Julie & Julia when you've finished it.

Sorry, I posted something about it in my other group. I haven't had time to post any here! I am planning on writing comments on the books I've read.
I really liked Julie & Julia. I love to cook and it was interesting hearing how she made a bunch of the recipes. That being said, I wouldn't even attempt any except the chocolate cake! Way too labor intensive for me, plus aspic sounds terrible.
The author is very funny. I was laughing out loud during the whole book at some of her comments and descriptions. She lives in New York and it was interesting reading about it and her job.

I noticed you hadn't read any in your "TBR Pile" listing, and had to laugh; it seems being on LT just helps those piles grow, if anything!

Yeah, I spend all my time reading everyone's reviews and adding to my TBR pile instead of actually reading them!!

Why would I list this book under my food category you ask? Because before each section there was a definition of a baking term and a recipe. I learned something I didn't know about baking so I think it qualifies!

Comments on Handle with Care
If I had not read any other books by Picoult I would be gushing over this book. BUT, I read My Sister's Keeper first and that effected my reading of this one.

My Sister's Keeper is one of my all time favorite books. Handle with Care is a clone of it.

There is a sick sister, a neglected sister, an overprotective mother, a confused father and a quirky ending. It is told from several different character's point of view.

I found myself not getting involved in the character's because I knew something bad was going to happen to one of them. I knew this because of the other book.

I know Jodi can write other books and write them well, I just felt this one was a formula she already followed.

I totally agree with your thoughts on Handle With Care.

-Shelter Me by Juliette Fay
I really enjoyed this book. The woman lost her husband young leaving her with two little kids. Having lost my husband young I thought she did well portraying her grief, except she rushed her into a relationship. The children and supporting characters really added to the story. I laughed and cried while reading the book.
Will read her next one.

This book was short and sweet. There were short stories with Sylvia and the new cook Anna. Then there were recipes for holidays and special days throughout the year. Lots of butter in the recipes!!! I'll probably try a few.

Love this book! Very clever premise of a town that outlaws letters of the alphabet as they fall from a monument. The author does an a great job of not using them as they are outlawed. Told in the form of letters to the characters.

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
This book was painful to read, not because of the writing but the topic. Lia is anorexic and a cutter and her best friend died. I had to put it down several times because it was so hard to read her pain. A very good insight into the mind of an anorexic.

Just browsing through your reads... It sounds like you might like Broken for You by Stephanie Kallos.

The story is about 37 year old Kelly getting breast cancer and then her dad getting bladder cancer. Funny in parts, sad in others. She is crazy about her dad! A good book club book.

Just finished One Second After by William Forstchen, an apocalyptic thriller about what happens after the US is hit with an electromagnetic pulse caused by a nuclear bomb set off in the atmosphere that causes all electronics to fry. Not a pretty picture. We revert to martial law, public executions, people starve and turn into depraved animals. I'm stocking up on canned goods and medicine as soon as I'm done writing this!!!! JK
Interesting thinking about how dependent we are on electricity for everything. My kids think food comes from the supermarket. How spoiled and out of shape we are. A scary possible future.
The writing was ok. A strong hero, kids to like, plausible actions and feelings.

Read a book I just saw on the shelf at the library, Suspect by Michael Robotham. It was set it England, which I don't usually care for, but didn't bother me. A hero with Parkinson's disease, Dr. Joe O'Loughlin (a psychologist) is a good character. He is falsely accused of murder and works to find the real killer. The first in a series featuring him. I liked the writing style and didn't want to stop reading it.

Just finished Long Lost by Harlan Coben. It has been a long time since a Myron Bolitar book. I wish I would have reread the last one before starting this one, as I had forgotten what happened to him.
I enjoyed this one as well, but thought some events a little far fetched. I enjoy Myron's asides - they make me laugh out loud.
Did not like it as well as his other in this series, but I will keep reading him.

Just finished All the Pretty Girls by J.T. Ellison. Great debut novel. A serial killer with a strange MO and a strong female cop. I will be reading more by this author.

Read Fade by Lisa McMann and Nightwalkers by P.T. Deutermann. Enjoyed both. Fade is the second in a series about a girl who gets pulled into other peoples dreams. It is a YA title. I now have to wait until early next year for the next installment!!

Finished 14 by J.T. Ellison. An excellent follow up to her All the Pretty Girls. I think it was even better. Glad I checked out her next one Judas Kiss at the same time so I can start it right away!

Finished Roadside Crosses by Jeffery Deaver. It is the next in the Kathryn Dance series. I really enjoy Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme series and was excited he is starting another. Dance was actually introduced in a Rhyme novel. This book was just ok for me. I did enjoy the mystery which kept me guessing, but was confused about why he added the secondary story with Dance's mother. Also, for such a supposedly great mother, she dropped her kids off at her folks an awful lot!! Looking forward to the next Rhyme novel.

Just finished I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti by Giulia Melucci. It is a non-fiction memoir, cookbook. I loved it. She is very funny as she writes about all of her failed relationships. Also, she is an Italian girl and I could totally relate to some of her stories of growing up! The recipes sounded delicious and could be made with stuff in my pantry.

Just finished The Scarecrow by Michael Connelly. He is one of my favorite authors. I love his Harry Bosch series. This book featured a character from one of his earlier books Jack McEvoy, a reporter for the LA Times. I enjoyed the bits of history of reporters and newspapers. They seem to be on the way out in this story as the Internet takes over reporting the news. Jack stumbles upon a serial killer while trying to prove a young kid from the projects innocent of murder. Then it is a rollercoaster ride till the end! I enjoyed it very much. Also excited that a new Harry Bosch will be out in October.

Finished Dark Places by Gillian Flynn. Very dark novel. Not sure I liked it. There really wasn't one likable character in the whole book!

Going to start In the Forest of Harm today.

Finally finished In the Woods by Tana French. It was ok. A little long for me and not a big payoff at the end.

Whoo hoo! I finally finished a category. Once again I was laughing out loud while reading the latest Stephanie Plum. Once again I read it in a day and now have to wait a loooong time for the next one. Loved it.

Really enjoyed Tamar a YA novel about the Dutch resistance during WWII.
Finished the YA category!! Need to work on my non-fiction.

Another category finished!! Just finished Judas Child by Carol O'Connell and really enjoyed it. I put it on my list because of the great reviews it got on LT and I was not disappointed. I'll be reading more of this author.

Tamar sounds good. I will have to look for it.

Judas Child is one of my favorites by O'Connell. If you're not ready to delve into her Mallory series, she has another stand-alone called Bone by Bone.

Another category finished!! Enjoyed Grippando's stand alone Intent to Kill. Baseball instead of basketball this time. The Asperger's syndrome character was interesting.
Need to get moving on my non-fiction category.

Just finished Undone buy Karen Slaughter. Excellent follow up to her last Grant County novel. A great story, love her character Will. Hope she continues with them.

I won't be finished by 9/9/09 but I'll get it done by the end of the year! Really enjoying Maria Snyder-her study series was excellent and just finished her first in the glass series. Waiting for my daughter to finish Catching Fire the sequel to the Hunger Games so I can find out what Katniss is up to! Need to get working on my non-fiction and cooking categories.

Finished another category!! Still need to work on my non-fiction and cooking books. Some of my books have done double duty in some categories. Once I finish the challenge I hope to go back and delete doubles and read other books for that category. Hope I'll have time!

Well I went in and got rid of any doubles so I could truly be doing the challenge. I am doing pretty good. Will still be able to finish before the end of the year.
Just finished When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead a really cute and interesting tween novel set in 1978 in New York.

Just finished Sea Glass by Maria Snyder, the second in her glass series. Another peril filled outing for Opal the glass magician. Although I usually dislike fantasy fiction I really like both of Snyder's series (Study and Glass) and now have to wait a year for the third one to find out what happens to Opal next. At least she doesn't end the book on a cliffhanger like Collins does!!

Just finished Midnight Rambler and The Long Wait for Tomorrow. I can't believe I didn't realize I had already read Rambler until I was half way through! I love James Swain and enjoyed his new character Jack Carpenter. I'll be reading the other books in this series.
Long Wait for Tomorrow was kind of a depressing 17 Again. The boy travels back in time, but it is not told from his point of view, which I found a problem. I never felt like I knew what was going on or why. Disappointed because it was a cool premise. I wasn't crazy about any of the characters in the story either.

Just finished The Maze Runner by James Dashner. Loved it! Kind of a Hunger Games for guys!! Can't wait for the next one in the series. Kind of wish they were already out and I didn't have to wait.

Finally finished a non-fiction book! On the Line by Serena Williams. Book was just so-so, but I think I'll pick up some other biographies to finish out my non-fiction category. I also decided to make my Cooking Light magazine count as an entry for my food category. I read them from cover to cover which is much longer than many books!

Enjoyed How to Slice an Onion. More a refresher about a lot of things, but I liked her sense of humor. Not a straight "cookbook" but more a narrative with recipes throughout. I've marked two recipes to try. Better yet, that finishes my food category!! Only two books to go to finish my challenge.

Woo hoo! One book to go! I've been reading books for fun and adding them to my ABC challenge instead of finishing this one. One more non-fiction book and I'm done. I've started Paul Shaffer's new book to finish it off.

I hadn't heard of The Maze Runner. I read The 13th Reality and like it, but didn't love it. Maybe I'll give this one a try.

DONE! Finally got that last non-fiction done! I feel good! Glad to do a challenge and finish. On to my 1010 challenge for next year.
