1Fogies
Traditional Chinese encyclopedias are compiled on a different principle to that in the encyclopedias that began to be made in Europe in the eighteenth century. The modern encyclopedia collects topical articles written by contemporary experts especially for this purpose. Chinese encyclopedias collect what has been written on various topics in the past, for whatever purpose.
The first of these, 藝文類聚, was compiled at the beginning of the Tang dynasty. If you can read ancient Chinese easily it is an excellent source of topical references in lots of old books. If you are still working toward a good reading knowledge, you can use this compilation as a source of examples of how a word you are learning has been used. It can be downloaded here.
On that website it is divided into fifteen sections plus a preface. Each section is structured as a single web page, so once it has loaded on your machine you can use Alt-F-A to save it to your hard drive. You can search each HTM file with Ctrl-F or you can do what the Fogies did. Open a new file in Word, open the HTM file of the first section of 藝文類聚, and transfer the text from the latter to the former with Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V. The second section can be added by the same method at the end of the first, and so on for the whole book. As each section was added, we deleted all spaces, which cut the file length nearly in half, and all line-feed characters, which allows the formatting we specified in Word to determine the line length. The whole thing added up to a book of 1380 pages including the table of contents and preface, and the .DOC file is less than 4MB long.
