I picked up a copy of Rob Roy: A Romance by Sir Walter Scott at a library sale. It was published by Chicago and New York: Rand, McNally & Company, and is apparently part of the 'Alpha Library,' but does not have a date. In the "Advertisement to the First Edition," there's a footnote that says "As it may be necessary, in the present (1829-33) edition, to speak upon the square, the Author thinks it proper to own that the communication alluded to is entirely imaginary." So, obviously the book is not from before 1833, but it's in very good condition, no spots on the paper, and the binding is not one that I would connect to books that old. The cover is a dark green with some stamping? on it in the same color; the title on the front cover is in the center in gold coloring, and on the spine along with 'Scott' and the publisher, also in gold. There is a gold ribbon bookmark that was once attached to the binding but has come loose. I think the edges of the pages might have once been gold-colored, but only the color on the top remains.
Does anybody have a good date they could place for this book? My guesses are somewhere between 1870 and 1940, given the binding, but that's a large time period, and I'm not an antiquarian and could very easily be mistaken.

The most specific WorldCat can get for your book is 191?.

Edited to say: at least, I think that's yours, as it's the only Rand McNally version of Rob Roy in WorldCat. And it's in your time-window.

Thanks! The edition you found on WorldCat had 491 pages, which matches my copy exactly.
