I can't log into BM or the forums...is it just me or is BM down? It's 4pm central time and I've been trying for an hour. I have a couple of books that need sending out.
Thanks,
Tammy

Working fine for me right now. Yay!

I haven't been able to mooch anything all day - I get double notices, and then when I click on the book, I am able to request it, but then it puts up a blank page, and it doesn't appear in my Pending page. Not sure what is happening!

Not working for me today! Darn, I needed to check an address for sending a book tomorrow...

I got in early this morning to list a book, but it was very slow and has now been down for 4-5 hours, I think.

Not related to the storm, BM lives in California :)
I've contacted the chief, he is usually able to bring it back up within a few hours,

It's threatening to storm. That's enough to make everything in California go screwy.

Me too! I've been trying to get on for awhile off and on, trying to respond to a mooch request and a wishlisted book that I was notified about. The message board must be down also, because I sent a message there to ask if bookmooch was down and it hasn't shown up yet in email.

So it looks like Bookmooch has been experiencing these types of problem since early December, at least thats when this thread started. I was thinking about signing up but if they continually have issues like this I'm not sure thats a good plan.
Is this normal for bookmooch or is this just something that started happening recently?

The second Sunday that bookmooch has been down. This is the best day for mooching too! gosh darn it.
25lunacat
bookmooch is worth it whether it keeps going down or not!! I don't regret for a second joining. Its certainly not continual, and its not like its a necessity to be able to get on every second every day.
26markwp
Bookmooch has been down for a few hours, yes, as you can see from the thread, this is the third outage this month, none has been for too long.
The site should be back up within a few hours.
In general the site is taken down for a few hours every 2-3 weeks (as most smaller sites are, although as LT does, many will announce it in advance...), but usage has been rather heavy this month.

lunacat is right! It happens now and then but it's not a great big deal. It doesn't generally last too very long. It's definitely worth a little inconvenience once in awhile. I just wondered if it was my computer and internet connection or if it was everyone.

Thank you all for your comments and thank you Mark for the update/explanation. I was mainly concerned and wondering if it would be worth my time to join as I work in the Internet world and it is common for sites that are offline for extended periods on a regular basis to disappear from the interwebitubes. Hence most sites quest for much sought after five nines (99.999% uptime).
It sounds like you guys have this under control so I will wait patiently and then give the service a try when it comes back up.

Outage was under six hours, longer than most,
As a free service with no paid staff, BM is unlikley to ever reach 99.999, nor will LT for that matter,
But the site has been up close to 99% of the time over the last year.

I haven't been able to do anything since Friday. Anyone else have problems?

>39 varielle: Are you able to view the forums, mooch, add anything, etc?
When I do I get this message:
I'm not new on the site. I can't even update my email. I've sent a message to tech support but haven't heard back yet.
When I do I get this message:
Before you can use that feature, we need you to confirm your email address. A confirmation email will be sent to you in the next 24 hours, once an administrator has reviewed your account.
If you do not receive a confirmation message, it may be that your email address has a spam filter which is rejecting the message. You might want to try using a different email address at BookMooch or checking your spam filter.
You can email tech support if you need help.

hmmm. that's odd. I just went on the site and all seems to be functioning as usual.
I've never seen that particular message that you are receiving, but I've had odd connectivity issues occasionally that made no sense but sorted themselves out in a day or so. I know they had some database thing going on last week, so maybe they are still working out the bugs...

Yes, I can get around everywhere. The thing that's slow for me is the search function, but I believe John explained it about his fight with Amazon US.

>41 Darth-Heather: my problems started when I opened an email from BookMooch last week on my tablet and clicked on the link. I use a VPN, so I'm thinking now that it might have triggered some security feature blocking me, and that the message I received is a default message.

I haven't logged in for a few years. I thought I'd try today...
I may not recall my username (I have the password written down), but every time I enter what I think it is (I've even tried a couple different ones though I suspect it's LibraryCin, just like here), the login "box" just disappears for half a second and appears again.
I've tried both Chrome and FF.
I thought I'd see if I could get a reminder for my username, but when I went to that page, I realized the email I originally signed up with no longer exists.
Looked, first, at the facebook page, but no one seems to be paying attention to it, so thought I'd stop in over here.
Thanks for any suggestions!

>44 LibraryCin: The whole set up is a bit antiquated IMO, but it's a small operation, run by just a few people.
http://bookmooch.com/about/email is the place to email. In my experience, I had to send emails to both "tech support" and the owner a couple of times before I got a response. I suspect that they get a large amount of spam that prevents legit emails from being seen.

>44 LibraryCin: Cindy - I tried searching for you under LibraryCin, but there is no listing under that name. I can try your old email address if you want to message it to me, but it's possible that your account was archived. They do that after a certain amount of time with no activity.
You might have to start over and open a new one with your current email address. At least you know "LibraryCin" is available :)

I’ve tried for two days from two different computers and can’t get in. Server stops responding. Anybody else?

I just tried it and couldn't get any response from the site. They seem to go through this a few times every year but eventually get it sorted.

I have been struggling with bookmooch (or maybe it's been struggling) for days.
I love the site - it's the only book swap service I can find that works for UK users - and I use it all the time.
Currently it seems to work really slowly almost all the time, sometimes so slowly that the server thinks it has crashed but a reload gets the page up second time around.
I don't want to stop using BM but are there any alternatives around ?

Yes, me too. Day before yesterday it was fine- I loggin in to acknolwedge receiving a book. Today I tried several times to go to the site to post a book I want to give away- can't get there. I hope it's fixed soon!
62hawk5391
Same here. Did they forget to pay the server bill? This is the second lengthy outage in the last few months. Frustrating.
64hawk5391
It looks like the site is back up again.
That was a long outage. Any word on what happened?

What’s the deal with the search function? Amazon US cuts BM off, now Amazon UK cuts it off. It almost renders it unusable. I can’t see BM surviving without some sort of search function. Very frustrating.
66mirigall
There are a lot of really strange things going on lately with the BookMooch site--missing emails, vanishing posts, responses that say a book isn't available when it's in somebody's inventory and hasn't been reserved, maybe others I haven't heard about yet. Amazon UK may be a separate problem
67mstrust
I've just tried typing in some popular books in the "browse" bar and they came back with no search results. Something's up.
68Darth-Heather
>67 mstrust: same here. i couldn't tell if the books I was trying to enter aren't part of the Amazon.uk database that they are pulling from now? I was able to add a few, but a lot of others couldn't be found, even entering the author's names turned up nothing. I'm going to bring those books down to the Little Free Library in the next town. Most of them are popular books; I could see if they were obscure or really old, but these aren't
69mstrust
Yes, when I entered the name of the first book and it came back with no result, I entered a best seller to see what happened. No result found for that either so I knew it was the search function, which may mean BM has no Amazon connection right now. Hopefully this gets fixed but it looks like it's been like this for a few weeks.
70varielle
BM lost their connection to Amazon UK a couple of months ago. You can look under unmoochable books to see if it can be found since they have retained that data.
74varielle
I checked sites that confirmed Bookmooch has been down for four days. Does anyone know what’s up?
75Quaisior
I don't know what's going on, but I swear I was able to use the site on Friday (6/17). I know it was less than 4 days ago.
76HeathMochaFrost
I received a package of four books on Thursday, but forgot to check Bookmooch to mark them received. When I tried it Friday evening (6/17), it didn't work. I confirmed it wasn't just a "me problem" with one of the "is it down for everybody or just me?" -- so that made me feel better, but now it's 48 hours later, and I've tried it several times Saturday and Sunday, and I've gotten an error message every time.
I wish there were a way to find out what's going on. If there is, I don't know it, as I'm more an intermittent user than a regular.
