I've been watching for a while, and have now tagged my singletons with ultb. What I don't quite understand is what is the difference between this group and Singleton Showcase?

Are you kidding me. There is a huge difference! I mean really! Ahh lots and lots of differences... For example Unique Library Thing Book Group has a totally different name. Secondly we have much more detailed and humorous group description.

In addition Unique Library Thing Book Group is totally different from the other groups like One of a Kind and The group who shall not be named

Unique Library Thing Book Group focus not just one unique book but, a user's whole mass on unique books. Unique Library Thing Book Group suggested using a special tag ultb which none of these other groups suggested.

We have also been very busy stretching the meaning of "book".

So just be careful when you say Unique Library Thing Book Group isn't Unique! ;-)
