Can anyone please help with a really simple way to do a provisional cast-on? I knitted the "extermiknit" dalek for my grandson (as his father is a Dr Who fan) but used an ordinary cast-on and had a real problem when I had to knit "down" from the bottom of the knitting. I want to make another one using a provisional cast-on this time.

This web site shows several methods for casting on. Scroll almost to the bottom for a video showing provisional cast on.

Thanks a lot - I'll give it a go.

Another website to check out is Eunny Jang's "Majoring in Lace" Tutorial. That link is entirely on Cast-Ons.

My personal favorite is the crochet chain. It's the "Invisible Crochet Cast On II" on Eunny's tutorial. I use it for all of my toe up socks and for lace projects that call for provisional cast ons. Good luck!

Not a problem. I can't tell you how many tutorials I went through with that invisible cast on until I finally found Eunny's. It was like the clouds parted.
