My brother is pregnant - OK, it's actually his wife who's pregnant. I would like to make them something and that had me thinking about knits I had received when mine were small.

What were your favorite baby items as a parent?

I'm not a parent, myself, but I've knit extensively for my niece.

She's gotten a ton of use out of the kimono from Debbie Bliss's Special Knits. Because of the style it has grown with her - she's 17 months today and she began wearing it last spring. I made mine from some delicious Joe Sharp DK, bought as a close-out from WEBS. It's soft but has worn like iron.

Until she outgrew it, she also wore her Tulip Baby Jacket nearly every day. Easy on, easy off, matched everything. If you want to work it in Dream in Color, though, buy the pattern and yarn together as a kit, or it'll be a $200 sweater.

There are photos of both on my Ravelry account and on my blog, which is linked through my LT profile.

Poncho! Great item without a lot of fit that can "grow" with a baby if you make them long enough for a blankie.

My kid wore his until he was 18 months, over his jammies.

I made some when he was a toddler/preschooler, one to keep in the car when he got chilly. The other one he wore over his jammies.

Millions of free patterns for them out there.

I've knit a poncho and hat for all my nieces and nephews and their kids. They love 'em.

#2 Wow Calotype! What a wonderful blog. I love the sweater you did for Christmas 2007 - way out of my league.

Thank you for the tip about the kit. The tulip sweater looks like something I might be able to do. I especially like that it doesn't have buttons. You always worry that they might eat them.

#3 nohrt4me, a pancho is brilliant. Another project that I think is withing my skill range. I knew someone in the LT crowd would come up with something original. Thank you.
