Did you hear that the Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) recently reversed it's own decision to buy Enlgish only Audio books. However, the city of Frederick had approved earlier to have documents written only in English and not any other Languages. I also think that Urbana had also passed the same rule over the summer as well. I know for years there has been a great debate on whether or not to make English the Official Language of the United States which I personally happen to agree with myself. Even though I know America is a melting pot of a lot of people from other Countries and Cultures though not all of them know how or even bother to learn how to speak English. I don't think this is very fair to us. I mean if we were to move to a non-speaking English Country we would have to learn how to speak that Country's native language just to survive on a day to day basis yet a lot of people don't even bother to try and teach English to their children at home. I'm not saying the FCPL should or shouldn't just buy the Audio books in English however they have the right to spend the money from their budgets however they see fit to spend it. I was just curios to see if anyone else had heard of this recently and what their take on it is too.

Hi beatles1964. I was glad to hear that FCPL had reversed itself on this decision because there are already so many barriers to encouraging immigrants to use libraries. With growing communities of immigrants all over the country, there are so many services that libraries provide that could help them, but many are distrustful of government services to begin with. Alienating them further by refusing to supply foreign-language materials only exacerbates the problem.
Libraries need to be able to cater to these ever-growing populations in order to show the library's worth to the community come budget time. It's an up-hill battle.

Audiobooks in froeign languages are a boon to Americans who are either bilingual or are trying to become fluent in a second language.
I can't see limiting languages. That's ridiculous. There are enough barriers to communication in life (and enough egocentrism) as is is!!

I know they have a foreign language print collection--Spanish and French are the first two I think of at the moment.
I'm glad they changed their decision--it would be great if they expanded their foreign language holdings!

Well maybe they will if they get enough interest and their patrons let them know that is what they are intesrested in and would love to see them get more foreign lanuage print in their collection to expand beyond what they already have.
