I am a literary translator, and I'm very much interested in the Irish diaspora to Latin America. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions of any contemporary authors whose writing is influence by Irish immigration, or who are writing about Irish themes of identity?

Any pointers anyone can give me would be fantastic!

i am not drawing any ideas except to point you towards Argentina which does have a long history of European migration and i do know quite a few brits and scots who are living there for several generations.

There is Rodolfo Walsh, who comes from Irish lineage. I'm not sure if any of his work is translated - from what I understand he has quite a high reputation in Latin America. Since most of the Celtic migration happened at least 150 years ago it is difficult to see the level of influence - I know Borges talked of Robert Louis Stevenson and other English language writers as influences.

You definitely need to look here Irish Latin American studies.

I suggest the following article of the journal "Irish Migration Studies in Latin America":
- Irish Mexican, Latino Irlandés: Fountains of Literary Invention, by David Vela (http://www.irlandeses.org/0703vela1.htm)
- Spain in Irish Literature 1789-1850: An Approach to a Minor Representation, by Asier Altuna-García de Salazar (http://www.irlandeses.org/0707altuna1.htm)
- Reinventing Brazil: New Readings and Renewal in the Narratives of Irish Travellers, by Laura P.Z. Izarra (http://www.irlandeses.org/0607izarra1.htm)

And two theses:
- Diasporic Narratives: identities in formation. The Irish under the Southern Cross, by Laura P.Z. Izarra (http://www.irlandeses.org/litizarra.htm)
- How the Irish Became Gauchos Ingleses: Diasporic models in Irish-Argentine Literature, by Edmundo Murray (http://www.irlandeses.org/ia_last.htm)

I hope this helps,

Edmundo

Don't know if anybody's still around, but there's the Argentine Benito Lynch, author of El inglés de los güesos, a slightly odd book. He wrote a lot of other stuff, too, but I haven't read any of it.

The "inglés," of course, is almost certainly an Irishman.
