I'd like to find some good fiction set in British India. It can be specfic or pure historical, so long as it's good writing with a feel for the time and place. Any recommendations?

The Jewel in the Crown by Paul Scott, and The Far Pavilions by M.M. Kaye.

I'm currently reading One Last Look by Susanna Moore and it's excellent. My next book will be Up the Country by Emily Eden, since Moore's book is heavily based on the letters and journals of Emily and Fanny Eden.

If you're looking at Emily Eden, the journals of Fanny Parkes (issued as Begums, Thugs and White Mughals) are written at the same sort of time but from quite a different perspective!
