Books That Made Me Think: American Gulag

American Gulag, by Mark Dow gave me information and insight into US immigration policy and procedures that made me think, made me angry, and made me very alert to abuse.

The horrors of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo were clearly predicted by this book, which, sadly, few have read. I recommend it highly. It's intensely readable and shocking. On another message board, I tried out some direct quotations from officials of immigration prisons on the members, and the response was unanimous shock and disbelief.

Further to the immigration question and again a compulsively readable and poignant book, I also recommend The Devil's Highway, by Luis Alberto Urrea. The statistics he cites in the closing chapter alone make the book worthwhile reading.

To counteract the dismay that might have been produced by reading that book, I recommend reading through this article, as well as through a few of the surrounding others: Systemic Flaws In the Reported World View. Although of course I am not saying that you didn't have reason to be upset, it sounds very interesting. If I read it I'll be sure to follow up.

Excellent link, keithguh. I read/skimmed the whole thing, all (at this writing) 16 pages. It made my week-end.
