Welcome to the Maryland Librarythingers group!

I am born and raised in Southern Maryland, still live and work in the area, and thought it would be great to connect with other Marylanders who use LT.

So chime in, say hi!
Let us know of books about Maryland, by Maryland authors, etc, that you have read.

(Me, chesapeake by james michner has been one of the few I've read.)

You know, I may have to redo the group description to attract more people here. *laughs*

Frederick. Wow, use to travel out that way like once a week to see friends. (They've all moved by now.) I'm down in lowly Calvert County.

Hello from Rockville, Maryland, in Montgomery County.

I'd like you all to know how much I like the book Rockville Pike by Susan Coll. The book is chick lit but good and funny. It's set in my hometown of Rockville, although the author lives in Bethesda. :-)

*waves to other Marylanders*

Frederick County here. But Carroll County is across the street and Howard and Montgomery are about 2 minutes down Rte 27 south. I live in a giant corner! I was born and raised here...moved away (several times) and came back here.

One "book thing" I love about MD is our state internet Inter-library loan system called Marina. Many times I will see a book recommendation and frequently my county won't have it but I can get it from somewhere in the state system. My daughter recently moved to Virginia (not northern) and is suffering library withdrawal :-)

Hi Marylanders,

I live in California but grew up in Washington, D. C. and spent 20 years living in Prince George's County (Oxon Hill, Clinton, Fort Washington, District Heights and Forestville.) Miss it a lot and glad to see these messages.

Well, when you see my user name, you'll understand I don't belong here, but I hope I'll be welcome! I have never lived in Maryland, but my father was born in Washington DC and grew up in Prince George's County. Both of his parents were born and raised in Charles County. Since my parents are both gone I love to learn all I can about family history. I have an aunt who still lives in Charles County and we visit her about once a year and always enjoy the sites and history near her. One of the tags in my library is "Charles County", as I have many books about the area and love learning about my family's history! So I consider Maryland my adopted home and certainly a place I love! Oh, and what about the crabs?? I ate at Pope's Creek three times in one week this summer!! Just thinking about it makes my mouth water!

Hello - I'm a new LT Marylander from near Baltimore. Maryland is my adopted home state - I did not grow up here but have lived here for almost a decade. Got my library degree at University of Maryland a few years ago, did some volunteer cataloguing for the Maryland Historical Society (before I got my real job), and just found out about LibraryThing yesterday. What a cool concept! I've only catalogued a few things so far - mostly from my "unread" shelves and my daughter's latest finds. Glad to meet you all and looking forward to reading more messages!

Greetings from Hagerstown in Washington County. I stumbled on this group this morning. I'm originally from Baltimore but have lived in Western MD for... a heck of long time. I love my state so I'm happy to see this group.

I'll cross-post this from the Group Reading the States, the Maryland discussion thread.

"I've got a few non-fiction recommendations on Chesapeake Bay, in Marland (but also Virginia and to a lesser extent Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, and New York, the other states in the Chesapeake Bay watershed). Yeah... I realize it's kinda regional rather than state-oriented, but still definitely *place-bound*.

Chesapeake Bay Blues: Science, Politics, and the Struggle to Save the Bay (American Political Challenges) by Howard R. Ernst is an interesting look into the political challenges facing the restoration of Chesapeake Bay, with specific reference to blue crabs. It's amazing to see all the layers of organizations, institutions, and agencies laid bare and realize how they could all be doing a better job.

Another on the theme of Chesapeake Bay is Turning the Tide by Tom Horton, who writes, or wrote, for The Baltimore Sun. He's got a really well laid out look at the ecology and environmental stresses put on place in the watershed. Pretty thorough if you want a sense of how people and environment relate."

Also, Chesapeake Futures, edited by Donald Boesch and Jack Greer looks at Chesapeake Bay, and outlines future scenarios. Available in PDF as well, I believe.

Greetings hons, Glen Burnie here..:)

Born and raised in Pigtown...know where that is?

15GoofyOcean110
Mai 26, 2008, 7:34 pm

Not sure where Pigtown is, but I get locally grown produce from a farm in a town called Bivalve, and have passed by a sign for a town called Hicksville. Seriously.

16MDLady
Mai 27, 2008, 8:25 am

Well, Pigtown isn't really a 'town' I guess. It's a part of downtown Baltimore. In the past they used to run the pigs up the main street (now Washington Blvd) to the slaughter house. The name Pigtown took hold and it's stuck.

Me, too, missylc (been a member for a little while, that is, without posting). I've been hanging around near the food listening and smiling politely to get to know who's at this party before drawing attention. I'm from Rockville. That's *from* as in not just where I live now but where I'm from. Have to say that growing up I never thought of myself as someone who would stay in her hometown. (Brings up image from Dixie Chicks, "My friends from high school ... moved into houses in the same zip code where their parents live..." I'm not in the same zip code but the next one over.) Having lived here for decades, I do wonder sometimes why I don't run into more people I know. Maybe if I hang out at the right bookstores, I'll run into some of you.

I know several people who went to Peary as I live about a mile away now. Our neighborhood has had many people raising their families in the same neighborhood they grew up in so several Peary grads around. I seem to meet Peary grads frequently but especially at the Rockville Scottish Festival hosted by the Rockville High School pipe band which was transfered from Peary HS when it closed. All the old pipe band families from Rockville and Peary show up. And my two kids are current and former Rockville HS students.

Juil 30, 2008, 1:36 pm

No, I didn't. Was it any good? I see he's famous for being on The Daily Show and on being in some movies I have never even heard of before. And for having bit parts in some movies too, like Hannah and Her Sisters. I love that movie however it's been forever since I've seen the movie and wouldn't even know what character to look for in the movie.

Was Butch still the Hall Monitor there at the time?
In 10th Grade Modern World History I had a teacher named Mr. Olson is he stil there? I remember Mr. Olson would sometimes show us some slides of himself and the convertible he used to drive at the time. Or Mr Fox the Driver's Ed teacher? Who was the School Principal at the time? I still try to keep up with they are doing in Sports and will root for them when I learn they are playing in the State Finals for a Championship. Has the school changed in looks any?

In the latest issue of The Gazette for Frederick City dated yesterday there was an article saying the Frederick Barnes & Noble Bookstore at 5500 Buckeystown Pike will host a Breaking Dawn party on Friday remaining open late to sell the fourth and final book in Stephanie Meyer's Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn at the stroke of midnight when it officially goes on sale. It goes on to say the Barnes & Noble welcomes fans of the Twilight saga to come in costume for a thrilling night of photo opportunities, themed activities, trivia contests, crafts, ugliest bridesmaid dress contest, and scariest groomsman contest and much more. Special interactive content can be found at www.bn.com/breakingdawn, including an exclusive video interview with Stephanie Meyer about her adult novel, The Host and book recommendations for fans of the Twilight saga and Stephanie Meyer. Fans are encouraged to discuss the Twilight saga all summer long in the Teen Reads Book Club at Barnes & Noble.com
www.bn.com/bookclubs).

In addition of the release of Breaking Dawn, the "Eclipse" Special Edition, a deluxe hardcover edition of the third book in the Twilight saga went on sale May 31. The deluxe edition is extra special for Meyer fans as it revealed for the first time both the cover art for Breaking Dawn as well as its first chapter. Customers can pre-order both books at any Barnes & Noble bookstore or online at www.bn.com. For more information call 301-698-0121.

I just wanted to inform everyone here about this event just in case you weren't aware about it. It sure sounds like it will be a lot of fun to attend. I may have to buy all of Stephanie Meyers books in her Twilight saga so I can understand what it's all about and also be able to join the Stephanie Meyers LT groups too. I would like to know how people feel about the Twilight saga vs. Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles series and also her New Tales of the Vampires series as well. Which do you think is better? And why do you feel that way? What are your opinions on the two different Vampire series from Anne Rice and Stephanie Meyer's Vampire books. If anyone does go to the Barnes & Noble event tonight I hope they'll let everyone know how it went. I bet it will be really big like each release of JK Rowling'sHarry Potter books were when they held events for the seven volumes in the series.

Don't forget to add your local event(s) to LibraryThing Local. I added the event you mentioned in message #34, beatles1964. This is important to bring up this and other local events to the home pages of Marylanders and others who live near Maryland.

Check it out!

#33, it was excellent. Black is in some obscure movies (Man of the Year is one), but I think he's hysterical. He has comedy specials air on Comedy Central from time to time -- if you see one, I recommend watching.

His parents were in the audience that night at SHS. Every graduating class was represented in the audience. It was really neat.

The school has changed a lot. The entrance is completely different. There's one hallway (it was the science hallway when I was there) that seems untouched and the auditorium is eerily the same too.

Butch was at SHS when I was there. I had Mr. Judd for Modern World (junior year) and Humanities (senior year). I don't remember Mr. Olson. Mr. Judd retired after my senior year. He was awesome.

38SqueakyChu
Modifié : Août 1, 2008, 1:40 pm

It depends on several things.

Increase the number of events you will allow. The maximum is 20.

Increase the milage range of what you will allow.

I increased my book number to 20 and and my mile range to 100 miles, and I got it to appear on my home page as event # 10.

See that pencil? It's an edit icon which will allow you to change the numbers.

Let me know if it works for you or not.

ETA: It will show only the bookstore, not the event on your homepage because there is no speaker or author present. You need to click on the store to see the event posted (although the B&N event listing makes it look very benign). Feel free to change the link or add a link to something better.

I'd just like to see more people in Maryland adding events to LT Local - a wonderful resource.

I hope all of you Marylanders have heard of and visited the BookThing of Baltimore some weekend when they are open. It is the world's only FREE bookshop! They accept used books from anyone who wants to donate and put them on the shelves, in the appropriate sections, for anyone to take. There is no limit to how many you can take. It is located in north-central Baltimore near Johns Hopkins University, just off Rt. 45, (Greenmount Ave.) above 30th Street, on Vineyard Lane. Hours are 9 am to 6 pm every Saturday and Sunday all year. See www.bookthing.org.

So if I bring 3 books to donate to them, I can take 3 of their books for FREE??? I just want to make sure I'm understanding you correctly.

I was actually born in Lexington Park, back when my dad was stationed at Pax River the first time. We lived up towards Leonardtown when he was stationed there the second time, then when he retired, we moved to Louisiana with the rest of our extended family. Somehow after grad school, I found my way back and have been in Howard County ever since. I’ve ventured down that way over the years - it’s definitely grown!
