I just finished this mammoth book and wanted to know if anyone else has read this Korean American author's debut novel. Naturally I have opinions, and will soon post them in my Library, but wanted to open a discussion on this and other recent Korean American lit.

I read this last month and was very disappointed by it. It started out with a lot of promise, but the longer the book went on, the more it drug and drug and the less I cared about the characters.
I think it ended up being close to a 600 page novel, which was about 200 pages (or more) too long. The storyline didn't seem to support that length. I did finish, but only because I had already read so much, I didn't want to stop in the middle.
The characters were stereotypical (in gender and race), predictable and pretentious. The writing was slow and tedious. The dialog just felt so forced and fake.
Ultimately (although it sounds like it) I didn't hate it. It was pretty much mediocre and instantly forgettable.

Yes, it was disappointing, especially in the light of other great Korean American authors, such as Susan Choi, and her most recent book, A Person of Interest. Could be the industry is attempting to create an Asian chick-lit genre...?
