others able to add to personal list?

I have used the list feature to make wishlists for myself. I set the "who can add books" = "you". I thought that meant that others would not be able to add books to my lists, but I see that the list al.vick-wishlist-next-in-series list has a book added by member ManWithAnAgenda. Right now it is not really causing a big problem, but I use these lists to decide what to buy, and if other people can add books to them, then I may need to find some other way to keep track of books I want to look for at bookstores.

Is this a bug? It sounds like it to me...

>1 al.vick:

I don't really use lists, so can't say whether or not it's a bug, but have you considered having a "Wishlist" collection as an alternative?

I wonder how that happened.

When I go to that list you mention: https://www.librarything.com/list/11199/al-vick

I don't have the blue "+ Add Work to List" button which appears on lists open to other people making additions, and correspondingly it does say in the 'type' section "Adding restricted".

Edit: the date of the other user's addition shows Added 2018-11-08, 12:44 PM
Is it possible that you may have at some point had it set to allow everyone to add? Then at some point changed the settings? If not then it does sound like a bug.

I'm afraid I don't have experience working with lists so can't advise much as to if there's a way to remove the other person's contribution, but I peeked at all the favourite lists linked on your profile and none of them gives me an option to add a work, so I think you have the settings correct.

If I scroll down that list I come to entries 77 onwards which give me the option of "remove from this list". These entries (77 onwards) also do NOT have a member name given.

(edit: deleted, actually I don't know enough about lists, and don't want to send off down unhelpful guesses, hopefully someone else can give some more knowledgeable help.)

Did you perhaps change the List Settings at some point, before members added those items? The "remove from this list" option means that a member added (and subsequently removed) items from that List... unsure if those were yours or someone else's previous additions.

There are books there that I have removed from "my list" but did not remove from the list entirely, since that seemed a separate option, and that seemed a way to keep track of things I might like to follow up on. I don't think it was ever set to a "let everyone add" I set it to me only when I made the list. So not sure what is going on. I will maybe post again if I see it happen again.

>2 lilithcat: I don't want a wishlist collection (or a different account) because then it looks like I "own" the book in a quick search on the mobile app.

I have another account I use to keep track of other things, and that account can add books (at least the ones I already have on the list, I didn't try adding something completely different) to the list al.vick-wishlist-next-in-series. Thus it seems like the option ""who can add books" = "you" is not working as hoped.

OH, so you're talking about the "Add To Your List" button still showing up even though you've restricted adding? I'm not sure if the "who can add books" setting is supposed to cover that or not. I'll look into it.

Okay, turns out this is expected behavior: Lists are a public feature. The "who can add books" setting covers *new* books, not existing books. I'm asking that we reword that setting for clearer explanation, and marking this bug as closed (not a bug).

oh, crap. I was hoping I could keep personal lists without others interfering. I guess not. Seems like that would be a nice feature.

>11 al.vick: I hear you. I think Collections in your own personal catalog are what we'd intend that to be used as, although I understand the functionalities aren't exactly the same. We'll be sure to announce if any changes are made to Lists!

yes, but on the mobile app, if I search for a book name, it will tell me do I have it or not. It is another click to find out what collection they are in, and I am more likely to make a mistake and not buy something I want thinking I have it, or buy something I already have. Just a note on how I use the app. I will make do. :). This is a fantastic site and a thousand percent improvement over paper lists!!

>13 al.vick: I've use Amazon's "Lists" feature for a least a decade now. I use them the same way you describe wanting LT lists to work. I have a "books - next in series", "books - maybe available now", "books - maybe 2023 releases", and so on. It's been invaluable for keeping track of books that caught my attention but haven't committed to reading, and thus don't want added to my book library/collection prematurely. To me, "Wishlist" should simply be a true list, not another collection for book records that factor into catalog stats.
