The Eagle of the Ninth

Hi Alex. I would not be optimistic that it would get a reprint but who knows with FS. Eagle of the Ninth should be one on the cheaper of the FS Suthcliffe titles on the secondary market. eBay or Abebooks would be your best bet to pick one up. The link below is the search results from Abebooks which has it between £10 - £40 before shipping. Most of the sellers ship to Germany.

They offer 'The Eagle of the Ninth' either as a single book or bundled together with a bunch of other Sutcliffes. They all come cloth bound and with their original black and white drawings by C. Walter Hodges. They are also limited, although in a rather generous print run. No affiliation.

Strange. I checked a number of them and they all gave rates to Germany. Here is an alternative on Booklookers.de which should be no problem shipping to you as the seller is in Germany. I have bought a couple of FS books on this site and had no issue. €55 + postage. No connection to the seller.

Ref the Slightly Foxed editions:

Their Slightly Foxed Editions and Plain Foxed Editions are sewn, and they are printed and bound by Smith Settle in Yorkshire. I don't have any of the cubs, but they are also made by Smith Settle. Some of their occasional books are perfect bound, using a different printer.

ABE Books has two sellers with prices under £30.00 for New or As New Folio Society copies of this book, some of the copies are still in shrink-wrap. I recall reading there was an ABE Books House rule that bookshops listing books via them have to sell world-wide.

I also note that the European Headquarters of ABE Books is in Dusseldorf!

I have collected all of the Slightly Foxed Cubs (Rosemary Sutcliff, Ronald Welch and B.B.) and I'm very pleased with them. The Rosemary Sutcliff titles are particularly nice.

The Cubs are larger than the normal Slightly Foxed autobiographies and more attractively bound, they are limited to 2,000 copies and hand-numbered. I've only purchased the autobiographies that I'm interested in but I really like the Cubs and wouldn't hesitate in buying them if the design appeals to you.

Just chiming in to say I too am pleased with the Slightly Foxed books I have, and can recommend them as well.

My understanding is that ruling is still in place. However, booksellers can in-effect opt out of shipping to Germany - all they have to do is not sign up to the LUCID scheme.

Just to clarify: At first look, all sellers on Abebooks do ship to Germany. Once you've put your book in your cart, you're told they don't after all. They first had to sign up for the new tax, then a waste disposal fee (the LUCID mentioned above). While the first worked out after a while and affected all of the EU, I don't know any (small) bookseller who felt the second was appropriate, so they just don't. That means Germans can buy from Abebooks using a forwarding service or not at all. It's a huge nuisance.

It might be connected to how many reprints there were. With FS, some early editions of series had lots of reprints but only one for later titles. I'm now sure about this one, but that's the way it went with Master and Commander and the Andrew Lang Fairy Tale series.

It’s also worth noting that Everyman’s Library has a nice edition of Eagle of the Ninth. Alas not limited, but it is sewn and cloth bound.
