Found: Help me please- Name that Book

I am an avid reader. I was a teenager in the 90s, back then I read a romantic, historical fiction that I cannot remember the name of. I feel like it's a classic book for some reason..
I always want to call it the The Tempest, but it's not

It's about a girl who is constantly on the run from an older man, her husband. He's angry. I think it takes place in France. a convent, a chateau, a vineyard- she falls in love with him, only to find out he is nothing like what she imagines him to be. Such an angry, ugly man. At some point in the story, they are on an island during a storm. Maelstorm is another word that comes to mind.

I have tried Googling for days and I cannot find anything close.
It doesn't have a happy ending.

I can't think of a specific title, but maybe look at books by Mary Stewart or Victoria Holt?

Maybe ... A Long Fatal Love Chase by Louisa May Alcott? I believe she is pursued by a man with the last name Tempest.

Or maybe a trashy romance... Love's Tempest, Elinor Larkin
